Would you believe a highly elaborate level?

(Kinda LC maybe, but whatever. Move this if you want.)

If anyone who posts regularly in RGT comes out tomorrow and claims to have been trolling/leveling for the other side, would you believe them?

EDIT: Right, my thoughts. Probably not. Most people are too honest. It'd be more believable that they started off honest and truthful and were then trying to pull off a level later than if they were a level from the start. Takes too much energy to keep up the level for long enough.

Re: Would you believe a highly elaborate level?

If someone admitted they were a level and their 'voice' changed I could see it. If Splenda said she was a level and then carried on conversations where she suddenly seemed reasonable and logical, what else could you conclude? It would be harder to swallow that she was crazy and irrational but could fake being reasonable to trick us into thinking her posts for the last couple of years were fake?

I do think its possible for people to fake a position for an extended period of time. But I think for someone to fake Splenda would require a very sophisticated actor. That being said, the proof would be in the writing.

I'd believe rizeagainst was a level. Not even kidding.

Edit: Pletho also, though that kind of goes without saying.

If Splenda is a level it is the most epic level of all time, hands down. No contest. Game over.

Not as in level = jokes or gimmicks, but there are a couple of posters I'm fairly certain are "alts", as in made to "explore" a different viewpoint...atleast one with a respectable postcount in RGT and also taken quite seriously.

I think Splenda really a born again Christian, but many of her posts are made strictly to get a rise out of atheists. She enjoys the negative attention. Jib does the same thing FWIW.

Pletho is a level, and evidence points to him being the author of this blog: http://dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com/.

Re: Would you believe a highly elaborate level?

It would depend on why they said they did it. In my opinion the inability of either side to understand the other's point of view would make pulling this off very difficult. An atheist is more likely to successfully imitate a believer than the other way round, purely because it's more liley they've 'been there'.

I find it hard to think someone like Pletho is genuine - I'm not convinced that implies he's an atheist taking the mickey though. Having said that, early on I was accused of being an atheist pretending to be a theist - if I'm a level it's a particularly deep effort.

Re: Would you believe a highly elaborate level?

Atheism has gotta be simpler to fake. Since all an atheist claims to be is someone whose threshold of convincing evidence has not been reached, this would seem a fairly easy position to simulate. On the other hand, having a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe (which, incidentally, does not equate to playing along in the "religious" environment you found yourself in until a different social pressure molded you differently) does change one.

You'd be able to pull it off, I suspect. I don't agree most can (witness the inability of many theists to distinguish between 'doesnt believe in god' and 'believes there's no god')

I could fake it and pass and you wouldn't know, at least in person. Think about it a lot of us did exactly that before we "came out" to our family and friends.
