The Apocalypse happened in the first century AD.

Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

Revelation 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Revelation 22:6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.

Revelation 22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

Hmmm OK well I don't just mean THE biblical apocalypse. I'm interested in all world-ending or dramatically transforming scenarios. I spent two years obsessing about doom so I'm always interested to hear what other people think about the various doomsday scenarios that are in the pipeline. I know many non-religious people who are convinced that something is imminent and are preparing for some kind of horrific Malthusian catastrophe. I'm still not sure if they're crazy or the rest of us are...

I'll be somewhat surprised if we go another 20 years without a nuclear attack happening somewhere in the world, or if not that then maybe a different but equally devastating technology of a kind we don't even know about yet. But it hasn't happened since Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the 1940s, and I find that amazing. We've been running really good imo. I think the forward progress of technology makes the continued run-good less likely. Eventually I expect an absolute lunatic who may or may not be a head of state to get his hands on something that will allow him to kill a very large number of people, and he'll think, "If I press this button I'll make history."

But that's not necessarily TEOTWAWKI anyway. Which brings me back to "Who knows?"

Spoiler:
The world ends on December 21, 2112.

Coincidence beggars skepticism.

The Jews, scattered, as fortold, now reunified in Judea.
Christ entombed for 2 days to rise on the third day
one day is as a thousand years to the Lord
two thousand years since the resurection (2 days)
Christ fortold to return and rule on the earth for a thousand years (the Day of the Lord)
The Mayian calender coincidentally runs out around, eh, two thousand years AD
the tower of Babel, languages confounded
global economy, united nations, G20, free trade, global recession, coincidence?
discovery of arsenic based lifeform
the rise of Islam, just coincidentally, the third of the Abrahamic faiths
weapons of mass destruction in the hands of men, power
the information age, knowledge, ethics and humanist thought
the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil

it will not be much longer

that adds to 12 which was the number of the disciples and the tribes of Israel and the number of eggs in a dozen

coincidence

12 adds to 3, the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost

I have 2 theories

this wikileaks thing could really be something awesome if the superdoublesecret probation files get released. but it porbably isn't what leads to armageddon, so hopefully my second theory i hope makes more sense.

armageddon IS NOT going to be a worldwide event, but its something to do with your soul, each individual might face a spiritual armageddon in their life, where their soul is up against the wall and a spiritual hell is unleashed upon you. but it will be between you and god, or the flying spaghetti monster, or the god you don't believe in... but it aint something we all do together.

Wow, soul up against the wall and spiritual hell unleashed upon me, I like that! I think that's a very good observation actually; I know a few people (myself included) who have already been through something like that. That's the interesting thing about religion: you can interpret everything literally or you can see it all as a metaphor for your own inner struggles. Unfortunately most people seem to prefer option #1...

Right now there's someone out there in the world who has the apocalypse of his life. And tomorrow you could find another person for which it'll end or it'll change his life.
You can wait for your own, but don't get your hopes up for all of us going in one swing ;-)

*e* ok I just see that SnotBoogy already said it. .)

In fairness, they don't quite specify WHO is coming in May, 2011. So there's wiggle room, IMO.

Maybe that's when Kent Hovind gets parolled?

Nobody's mentioned the most plausible scenario for an apocalypse? A meteor will smack right the **** into Earth killing at least 75% of life. That's my guesstimate. Because eventually, if we don't make it off this planet, which we should, then we are FOR SURE ****ed.

I don't believe in a religious "battle"-type Armageddon. You'd need a new Solomon's Temple for that to happen. When that starts getting built, then worry

Alien contact is the only other "plausible" scenario for me. Maybe we get invaded

Other than that, we're good. No big rocks hit us or grey people dropping bombs on us and I think we'll be around for a long, long time.

The end of the world as we know it? That could mean a lot of things. Are you referring to the extinction of humans? A major world even that drastically reduces the population? Vast advances in science or technology that completely change the way we live? It may be a lot sooner then we think. A few hundred years ago, people thought the world was flat, an example of a way that knowledge could change the world as we know it.

So its very possible that the answer is a few years, a few hundred years, or a few million years.
