The role of revelation in theism

By 'revelation' I mean direct experience of god e.g. hearing his voice, being visited by an angel/saint etc, not things like having prayers answered or a deep feeling of inner peace etc.

It seems clear that some very devout people never experience revelation (like Mother Teresa) while others do (like George Bush) and I'm interested in a) how many current theists have had an experience of this and b) how many former theists have had an experience of this.

Sharing of those experiences would be great, but I understand that many may not want to.

Just for clarification, I used to be a Calvinist, but now I'm an agnostic Deist with certain Christian tendencies. Does that make me a theist, or former theist?

agnostic deist with certain christian tendencies. i dunno if you're a theist, it depends.

are you a deist who thinks one should be a good samaritan and show love to their enemies?

or are you an agnostic who thinks there's a sizable chance that there's an intergalactic space jew who's monitoring this very conversation?

Yes.
No.

An agnostic admits that one can never be absolutely certain about anything relating to a deity. A Deist believes a God exists, but doesn't believe he "monitors" any individual. Christian tendencies would admit that a Deistic God COULD interfere, if he chose to -- like sending a saviour.

It's a pretty mixed bag. : )

Re: The role of revelation in theism

I want to talk to the former theist who's had a direct revelation. That just seems ridiculous to me.

Me too, that's puzzling. It's probably just some troll trying to mess with the poll. It just doesn't make sense.

Misclick, sry.

Though I had a lot more than feelings of deep inner peace etc., I was never visited by God, etc.
Now ofc, I think that religious experiences are caused by hormone imbalance and delusion by religious beliefs.

Re: The role of revelation in theism

I voted "I am a theist, I have experienced direct revelation"

Didn't read the definition being used for 'direct revelation' before voting. I wouldn't say I'm confident enough in what you're calling 'direct revelation' to classify it as such, so I'd lean more towards no 'direct revelation'. I think the term is ambiguous in itself from most believers' perspectives, so whatevs.
