Hawking - Into the Universe - Aliens

Quote:
It is extremely unlikely that life could spontaneously create itself, but I don’t think that’s a problem with this theory. It’s like winning a lottery. The odds are astronomical, but most weeks someone hits the jackpot.

I wrote it down while watching the show, doubt I heard the whole line. Anyway, it's still an interesting admission.

It was one of 3 quotes I have from the show - the others are:

Quote:
The numbers alone making thinking about aliens perfectly rational.

It's logical to wonder if there are intelligent beings.
The 3 together told me that Hawking thinks probability is relevant to these questions - which is contrary to what many skeptics say about, for instance, fine tuning. Not to mention that many skeptics also claim they think life was inevitable.

Edit: BTW, accidental life is NOTHING like winning the lottery.

NotReady, if you don't mind, take this to the off-topic quote thread (already been bumped). I'd like to reply, but don't want to here.

I don't want to delete anything. I'm done with the topic unless you want to continue elsewhere.

"Buddhism is functional atheism." Ananda Guruge

I'm slowly becoming a Buddhist. It's such an interesting philosophy.

When Lord Buddha spoke about suffering, he wasn't referring simply to superficial problems like illness and injury, but to the fact that the dissatisfied nature of the mind itself is suffering.
