Why did you use the prefix "merely", for questions beginning "I find..." and "I have..."?

"Pretty much. Believing in god is not necessarily dumb in itself but believing in anything without good evidence is probably not the best way of mapping an accurate picture of reality"

Beliefs are different than knowing. It's just your best guess at what's right.

How can atheists believe that everything being created from nothing is more likely than there being a creator?

I can't wrap my head around the created from nothing idea. But then where did the creator come from?

I am not sure that atheists claim everything was created from nothing

but what did god create everything from? You are happy to accept that he just pulled everything out of nothing? or did he create the universe from bits of himself? Or what?

I'm not completely happy accepting anything that I know isn't 100% true. But that doesn't stop me from having a belief.

For all I know god could have created all of this in his mind.

Right, or for all you know he could have farted it out of his behind one day. These sort of "maybe he did this" speculations get us nowhere.

So you choose to believe nothing since you 100% don't know the truth? Just because you believe something doesn't mean you stop trying to find truth.

Dont you see how fallacious it is to reason "oh well, its possible that he did X, therefore its all true"?

Its not to do with choosing to believe. What good would it do for me to fake it, and "choose to believe" in the bible and christianity?

It could change everything, actually.

When I chose to be a Christian again I did so on a kind of lark. It just happened to stick.

But now that I look back on it, the reasons that I had for believing in the first place were not good ones. Evolution was clearly false. The Bible was infallible. Worldly music was satanic. And so on like that. It was what I was taught by those Christians who mentored me.

I think one problem I had to overcome was associating faith in God with my former faith in God. With a fresh look, I found better reasons to believe.

It wouldn't do you any good. Because that is not what you believe. And lying to yourself trying to make yourself believe something, you'll always know you're lying to yourself. Not being allined with your true self. Not good for the soul.

Just because something is possible doesn't make it true. But not knowing truth shouldn't stop you from forming beliefs.

so what was all that stuff about "choosing to believe in nothing"?

yes it should. Why would you want to form false beliefs?

You choose your belief based on the criteria that you think is best for forming that belief. If it's a fact, than you know. It's not a belief.

You wouldn't want to form false beliefs. Do you believe there was a creator or don't you? This question can not be answered in a factual way, we can not prove it given what we currently know. So you can either not form a belief, or make your best guess given what you know.

If you think believing in something without 100% truth is a bad decision for yourself, than that's your choice. There's not much we truly know about our reality, just how we perceive it.
