My guess is that he misread this news piece: Earth closer to center of galaxy than previously thought

Maybe he was thinking of this, rather-- Earth possibly at center of universe

Mathematical equations are supposed to describe the physical universe, in light of the physical evidence. The physical evidence we have through decades of examining our galaxy clearly shows that earth is not in the center of the galaxy. If the mathematical equations do not reflect this, then it is not the physical evidence that we should question, but rather the mathematical assumptions that lead one to a contrary conclusion.
