the percentage that actually ID themselves in US polls as atheists is typically very small, usually around 2%. there's a lot of serious issues with bias and semantics at work with that question, though, so depending on how you define atheist the number could be much higher.
the percentage that ID as 'non-religious' is most recently 15-17%. this has doubled in the last 20 years.

I could google it I guess. I voted never since I just don't see it happening but the people that voted for anything less than 100 years are out of their minds. The crutch that Religion provides coupled with the fear of death that 99% of Americans (or humans for that matter) have ensure that the majority don't become athiest.
