I'd like to coin my own cookie-cutter response for whenever people say "God wants this" or "you must do that" or "there's no doubt in my mind that God wouldn't...". Here it is:

"Do you have any objective evidence to back up this absolute claim? (Please don't appeal to your holy book, because the other holy books also make the same claims)"

Feel free to c/p it and use it whenever necessary. Just be sure to add a trademark at the end.

I guess you'll have a hard time pleasing God then because if you never care about what he said then how are you ever going to aim to please him?

Its a little like knowing what flavor of ice cream your girlfriend likes.

You had to give a damn first about what she preferred before you can act in a way that pleases her.

Yeah, but I have objective evidence that my girlfriend (wife, actually) exists! (and I don't need a holy book to show you this evidence either)

Give me objective evidence that YOUR god exists first (without appealing to a holy book) and THEN we can discuss which flavor ice cream he likes.

I have given it before. Read my threads.

The lives of the Apostles are objective evidence.

Neither. But it's the first coinage available for RGTers to use in response to bold claims about things that nobody has the answer to.

I tell other Christians quite often not to make definitive statements about our faith that can't be found in scripture. It never works.
