We might use it in two cases: Either we saw or did hear something that is dumb, or we are the dumbs and didn't get it and now we want act like, we did get it, but it is dumb.
The first point (claim) in the story is: In the light of death, science makes no sense, and if it should make sense somehow, still it is not important. And the Atheist they are so proud about the discoveries of scientist. They are so proud that the science makes so important discoveries and they like it so much to decorate themselves with their discoveries.
The second point (claim) is: Believing makes us invulnerable against pain and fear.
As you guys did not begin a reasonable discussion (I cannot see any arguments against those claims, do you?) about those points, I ask myself, who should be faced with the face palms.

you could make strong case proving that only like, 10 guys in the world are "real, strong believers" though. but then you would have destroyed 6.77 billion minus 10 people. not only the atheists.

in fairness, i think its a bad argument to point out the smart atheists of the past and present. there are many more smart theists throughout history, simply because of their outnumbering atheists.

but arguments are either good or bad on their own merits. and theism is true or false on its own merits, not in who believes it or disbelieves.

I'm not "proud" of the discoveries of scientists. I didn't play any part in the discoveries. What reason do I have to be proud of them?

I'm appreciative of what science has given to us, as they have allowed us to enjoy the highest standard of living in history.

I'm an atheist because no one told me about god while growing up and when i found out about him i decided there is no reason and no evidence to believe in him so i don't. (and also - thats what shahrad wants to know - i don't gain anything from it. i lose.)
