Although one may not subscribe to Christianity, or any other "organized" religion for that matter; one can still embrace an afterlife. Condemning science is silly, seeing as it is actually helping to support "life after death" in some cases.
The way I see it, no matter how you slice it: Something had to be "just there". Something in the vast nothingness before creation exploded. You can believe it was random or you can believe it was intentional. Neither side of the argument can prove their case. The world, to me, appears to have an intelligent design (see DNA, etc.). To others, it may not I suppose.
