What made me think of this was at a Vietnamese restaurant I saw someone had stuck a dollar bill into the Buddha statue's arm as if the Buddha had power and could bring luck.
Buddha is treated as god out of respect. It's not like; "oh all might god save us or get this and that for us", but more like; "thank you for your teaching wise master". Hence all the chanting, kneeling and offerings. They are not expecting more out of him like you would from a god, they are just thanking for what he already gave any way they can.
That's for majority of Buddhists anyways. Some really believe that he has now became like a god and can help them or bring good fortune.
In any case, it's not lying if you really believe it. Lying would be knowing that what you say is not truth and still say it. When you believe something is true it's not the case.
