I caught the Buddhists lying the other day...

If Buddha is not a god then why treat him as such?

They make statues out of him and place offerings before him like he is God.

What made me think of this was at a Vietnamese restaurant I saw someone had stuck a dollar bill into the Buddha statue's arm as if the Buddha had power and could bring luck.

You probably saw the "laughing Buddha", a short, chubby statue, which has nothing much to do with real Buddhism. That statues real name is Budai and he is a Chinese folklore diety. The image is in a lot of Chinese restaurants. Rubbing his belly or donating cash is supposed to give you good luck. It could help some broken down poker players, you never know. After I belly-rubbed Budai, I hit a one-outer on the river.

But if you think about it that is a subconscious acknowledgement of deity.

They think or at least hope that the statue has power.

They think like a Christian asking God for a blessing.

It's just they are adding an offering to their prayers like Jews did in Old Testament times.

Before Confucius the Chinese did believe in a God they called him Shang-Di.

This was definitely a Vietnamese restaurant though....

Of course they could be Chinese Vietnamese owners....the Chinese are all over business in Southeast Asia.

In my home town there's a monument to Sir Robert Peel but I don't think anyone there considers him a deity.

Maybe a better analogy would be the Catholic Church and its treatment of the virgin Mary. Depends how glib I'm feeling, I guess.

You can accuse me of being dramatic but I just see it as a sort of lie....not a deliberate one but maybe an unconscious one.

Buddhists are claiming that Buddha is not a deity....so the Buddha shouldn't have any influence on outcomes yet they are treating him as if he has so I think that is a veiled belief in a deity or higher power on their part.

You can call it superstition...but even superstition is believing in a higher power.

It's one of those things that is pretty much in contrast with what the actual religious texts say but is practiced that way by many regardless. Buddhists are supposed to do a bunch of meditation as well, in some SE Asian countries they do none of that but instead treat Buddha as a god.

This is a bit of a no-true-Scotsman but take it for what it is.

I'm sure you can find plenty of examples of Christians doing things you would consider un-Christian as well.

Buddhists honor Buddha but do not worship him. There is no prayer. Just to repeat the statue you saw was not even Buddhist in the first place.

The word is honor in the Ten Commandments.

Just think about what honor means....we're suppose to love, honor and obey God...

If you honor someone then you love and respect them enough to obey them.

The word for faith in Hebrew is shama which actually means " to hear and obey"....

If you truly believe in God then you'd naturally obey Him wouldn't you....unless there is some kind of confusion, deception or opposing force working against your will....

There are always forces on people in this world....stress is a force....lust is a type of instinct and that is a type of force.....but we can control these to a certain degree when we follow God's ways.
