Inflation is good only because deflation is terrible. Deflation makes borrowing money really expensive. For a variety of reasons the inflation numbers you hear are overstated. So based on the CPI (consumer price index) if you hear inflation is 2% that means that it's probably actually a lot closer to 1%.

So inflation is bad for you in the sense that carrying cash costs money, but it's good for you in the sense that things in the overall economy would get ****ed (which would also be bad for you) if we got deflation and stuck in a deflationary cycle.

Most inflation statistics do not count gas prices. However that is one of the biggest parts of any household budget.

Why does deflation make borrowing more expensive? What did we do when we had the gold standard? We seemed to get by with the exception that growth was real growth and not printing press growth.

In a presidential election I believe it is somewhat higher than that.

In Presidential elections it's usually around 50% of eligible voters. In the off season elections it's closer to 30% iirc. And yes that does truly reflect who the country wants in office based on the type of system we have.

You have a more representative democracy because your representation is proportional to the votes a party gets. Ours is not. That's basically why we only have 2 party's and why turnout is so low. It's not that we "care" any less than Aussies, it's just the system we use.

True this. While our $ continues to rise so do our interest rates. Families and mortgage owners are doing it tough. A normal weekly wage might be $1200 but $400 of that has to go to the bank of which $250 is interest alone. It is madness. Our dollar being better than yours just seems to makes us worse off really.

Because it's such a huge % of the household budget AND because it's so variable from quarter to quarter is exactly why it's not included in the one that most everybody pays attention to. Of course it's included in other statistics it's just not as useful. I'm not going to get baited into a Ron Paulish argument about this I'd rather have a terrorist cell in my basement. I just thought you honestly wanted to know.

Correct.

I turned up last time but didnt vote. Left the form empty, folded it in half and put it in the box. About 5 to 10% of votes are informal.

I didn't say anything about having a terrorist cell in my basement.

I can see why you would not want to have the biggest part of a household budget not included in an inflation statistic. (of course I am being sarcastic)
