Set in 3 bet pot - what's the best river play?

Just won a big pot and still stacking chips. Villain in the hand views me as good and aggressive. I've been playing a lot of hands. Haven't played with him too long and don't think he 3 bets light. Stacks are 2500 effective

I raise 88 utg to 40, villain 3 Bets to 125 from utg+2, I call.

Flop (265): 8dKd3c
- I check, villain bets 200, I call
Turn (665): Qs
- I check villain bets 500, I call
River (1665): Ah

Villain has 1675 left. What are your thoughts on how to play the river here? I know the flop/turn can be played differently but try to focus responses on the hand as played.

A) Shove
B) bet fold
C) check fold
D) check call

Re: Set in 3 bet pot - what's the best river play?

Feels like most live players just call preflop with AK in villain's spot nowadays, assuming the game is 9 or 10 handed. I probably check/fold river against most, but I'd check/call against some internet kids.

I don't think there is any merit in betting. 100% of the hands that call you on the river are hands that will bet themselves when checked to.

Re: Set in 3 bet pot - what's the best river play?

I'd much rather c/r flop, but as played I think A and D are pretty close. I don't see any way villian is checking behind so I guess c/c is fine, if q isn't on the turn I would just stuff, imo it's that close. If folding is a legit option here all I can say is I am glad I am not playing in your nitty games because I would probably chase every conceivable draw knowing I could AI bluff the 'good' players in most pots.
If I was villian I would def show up with aq/kq here sometimes so folding seems wildly absurd to me, you guys aren't even super deep.

is villan a young kid or an older guy? think thats important in terms of what to do on the flop - as played though id just jam or bet like 3/4 pot and try to rep missed diamonds....villan isnt folding 2 pr and might level himself into checking back sometimes - if villan is capable he might hero call with AJ here where he'd check back.....the only argument for checking is if hes capable of 3 barreling here

Villain is 30 or so. No hoodie or shades, wearing a golf shirt. I opened utg so very doubtful he's 3 betting AJ/KQ type hand. At a passive table, most decent players arent playing back at a good player with a winning image since there are so many other easier spots IMO.

Good comments so far. Keep em coming.

assuming his 3b range is pretty nutted just c/r flop unless hes someone that folds AK here(seen it before in live poker!)......I mean hes gonna check behind most turns with QQ and never folds AA/AK.....only reason I asked is if the villan is super aggro where his 3b range is going to be wider so we can let him bluff on future streets

Tough spot.

If the only read on him is you don't think he 3 bets light, then I think it's a check/fold.

Assuming his 3b range in that spot is QQ+/AK:

- his line makes sense with QQ+
- I think he slows down or bets less on turn with AK

The only thing we can beat is AdQd, but is this in his 3b range?

Re: Set in 3 bet pot - what's the best river play?

I just had essentially the same hand come up, though not both UTG and I have a less aggro image than you. I jammed because I has set and I thought a jam looked like a FOS repping of JT or a missed flush, and I got called by AK. In retrospect I think I should have checked river since he was going to bet pretty much everything he would call with.

Was there any fourbetting going on (i.e. would he have expected you to four-bet AK)? Would he have expected you to raise AK/KQ OTF?

No 4 betting going on. Not sure what he expects of me but don't have much history and he views me as a guy he doesn't want to get too involved with. Basically when he 3 bets me I think he has JJ+, AK, maybe AQs. This is not a guy who's going to triple barrel bluff his stack off in a 3 bet pot (or that was my read).

Re: Set in 3 bet pot - what's the best river play?

As played, I'd check evaluate river. (though betting/shoving does have some merit)

Board ran out kinda bad. We basically need to know if villain bets river, if he would value bet AK/big bluff.

Villain's going to need to shove river for me to really consider folding. If we REALLY think he's playing very solid vs us, I could consider tank folding.

Everything pretty much depends on our read of villain/gameflow and river action/sizing.

(But yeah, I'd c/r flop a lot here - or even possibly donk)
