I actually sold for a little higher than .35 cents, but whatever. Still obviously way lower than I would have liked, but there really was not a lot of interest from people looking to buy from random people at this point. I'm happy to get anything and figure I can grind back the difference before they actually pay out.

Gold = scarcity. Really understanding what scarcity means is important to understanding why gold has value.

This has been understood by every civilization since before human history was recorded. It's not just some random coincidence that both Aztecs/Incas and Romans/Greeks, who had no interactions at all, all used gold as a currency.

It's also been argued in almost every generation that it is some "dumb shiny metal". This message generally comes out of governments and central banks. Because of this many gold bugs are also anti-government or anti-centralization.

For gold I like buying coins with some numismatic value. In this sense it is a mix of coin collecting and investing. You can get some really nice coins for about $200 over spot:

I've stopped buying metals for storage reasons though. Most of my stuff is in safe deposit boxes in the United States and I don't have easy access to it.

nice post. Buying PMs and then putting them in a safe deposit box sort of defeats the purpose of buying them imo. If you were a true gold bug you'd have the stuff buried all over your yard with some land mines.

What kind of results have you had?

The storage issue is a bit complex, but there are basically two options for any decent size collection:

1. Safe in house

2. Safe deposit box at bank

With the safe, you have to decide whether you want a fireproof safe or a extremely heavy one. With the heavy one it needs to be in a basement (cause it's heavy), but then is susceptible to things like floods or plumbing accidents. With a fireproof safe, it is might lighter, and can be placed upstairs, but makes it much easier for someone to remove by pushing it out a window for example.

If you have a safe, it increases the chances your house gets robbed. Even if you told zero people you bought metals, maybe someone saw you had some safe installation people at your house... and pretty much someone is always going to know like your family or close friends.

The safe desposit box has more obvious drawbacks like the yearly fee, the bank being closed, bank holidays, the bank stealing from it, a fire at the bank, or government confiscation.

You can get insurance on either the contents of a safe or a safe desposit box.

The best idea is to diversify. Some in a personal safe (get multiple safes in multiple locations in your house), some in bank dep box, some in a family members safe that you trust. Even burying it or hiding some in random places in your house isn't a terrible idea imo.

That is very debatable imo. History repeats itself, not everyone gets their house fully robbed to the point a hidden safe is looted.
