yeah in the ride for cancer each team member raises about 10k but you work together with fundraising events etc.

imo its not about how interesting or difficult the task is as much as its about finding people with similar interests to work with and reaching people that care

a lot of people climb mount kilimanjaro for various charities. if i was interested in helping animals i would try to network with like minded people and build a team to go do something like kilimanjaro. a friend of mine just got back.

lots of benefits in forming a team like pooling networks for throwing events/parties, credibility when approaching sponsors/endorsments, sharing ideas, and sharing workload. if you dont know people with the same interest go find them. there's probably people that work at existing shelters etc who would love to get involved and also provide contacts and credibility.

its much easier for someone with a voice like bob barker to make an impact but its not impossible for you to do this solo, just more difficult. good luck

Anyone ever heard of BOINC or their projects? http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php It's a network where you "lend" your computer to certain project(s) to do work for the project; these science projects typically need super computers but since they don't have them instead they use volunteer computers around the world.

For example, I think the most popular is SETI (search for extra-terrestrial intelligence). There are projects that are researching folding proteins which could leads to cures for cancer/HIV/etc. There is a project researching climate prediction. The list goes on.
