IMO the politics of getting into the best games are more elaborate than merely buddying up to the floor/management. I'd say that "befriending" the fish is more important these days. Most of the best games are essentially home games that are played in casinos, meaning that they're pre-arranged with certain connected players getting invited. Being in with a floor person will get you a call so that you can get on the list but, by then, it's often too late, because people don't tend to leave when the game has an epic drooler dusting off six figures. I heard one live pro make the remark once while sitting in an insanely good 25/50 game, "I wouldn't leave this game if my house was on fire." And, in fact, it probably would have been -EV for him to leave if his house was on fire.

I guess the best way to get your foot in the door on this sort of thing is to show up continuously at live venues for a while and don't be a douche.

Re: Official 2011 Las Vegas Regulars Thread

What is the best room(s) for 5/10? Or is there not a big difference in game quality anywhere? In my limited experience it's the latter.

As far as the rooms themselves I prefer Venetian and Wynn over Bellagio and Rio (during wsop). Haven't been to Aria. Any other rooms spread 5/10 regularly?

Yeah I am with Song here, I would never dream of playing live if the stakes are not at least $10-$20 NL blinds. The small stakes fullring FT forum is so LOL with all the kids talking about playing 200NL at the Venetian. LOL LOL LOL!!!! Playing 200NL live must be the equivalent of mass multitabling 10NL!!! Oh how the mighty have fallen, time to look for jobs.

Re: Official 2011 Las Vegas Regulars Thread

I have been making the transition from online to live and it has been going really really well for me in the past few weeks. The timing was somewhat ironic because i had been planning on trying to get into more live games right as the sites went down. So i had some money offline although probably about equal amounts of it online.

In the past 2-3 weeks ive probably shipped like 45k or something playing primarily 10/20, with some 5/10 and 10/20/40. Here are the goods on venues.

Venetian - has a solid 2/5 game that is almost always deep, 1k max buy in. 5/10 goes through periods of being dead or going a bunch, but IME recently its been going almost every day. the 5/10 is uncapped but what mainly happens is the majority of the table has ~2-3k, couple guys are short, and a few guys are really deep but sometiems the money isnt even really in play. Once in a blue moon 10/20 gets going but normally its with me playing because im challenging people to hu4soulz. Otherwise i wouldnt count on 10/20 going. (Also had a 5/10/10 game going witha 5k min bi recently that seemed pretty decent)

Bellagio - 2/5 is lol capped at 500 so never play that there. 5/10 is capepd at 1500 so not really a terrible choice esp if your just moving into 5/10 or are on a downswnig. Times have changed in teh bellagio however, the 10/20 that used to be running around the clock has become 10/20/40 (yes, 3 blinds). 10/20 barely runs and when it does its at peak hours that can often have 3 10/20/40 games going while only 1 10/20 is going. If you try to get into 10/20/40 at around midday you can end up waiting FOR ****ING EVER it prob averages easily over an hour to get into and can be up to 2. Its better to join this game early in the morning or later on like 5-6 pm if you can help it. The majority of the table will be on 10kish, a few shortstacks, and a few guys insane deep, pretty standard for all non capped games.

Aria - 2/5 is capped at 1000 I beleive. It almost never really has 5/10 going here. The first game that starts to be played fairly frequently is 10/20, which goes almost every day. If you try to get a mandatory straddle going people tend to be pretty open to it and its gone down the few times ive plaeyd here. IMO, this game ends up being anywhere from vvv good to vvv tight depending on the lineup, have to know whose in teh game (IE sarge, moohaha, bright, etc etc are all good for the game)

Re: Official 2011 Las Vegas Regulars Thread

Everytime I've gone Venetian has had several 5/10's going enough oldish degen regs to keep it going without any fish. Bellagio they had 2 tables of 10/20 everytime I went when I was there in October and I've been told that game basically is now a 10/20/40 it was kinda lolsoft when it was 10/20 but I've heard it's a bit tougher now that it's 10/20/40 but still probably not any tougher than like 2/4 online.

Re: Official 2011 Las Vegas Regulars Thread

What about commerce from what I read commerce has better action than anything vegas has to offer? If 10/20/40 is the highest regular game in vegas the ceiling is pretty low? I cant imagine moving from midstakes online to grinding 5/10 with best case scenario grinding a 10/20/40 game...

If I were to switch to live Id want to grind somewhere where at least 25/50 runs regularly...

Where have you been playing primarily 10/20?

If you want to play 5/10, the uncapped game at the Wynn is probably the best bet. You have a stated preference for the Wynn or Venetian rooms over the Bellagio, so one of those two would be better. I don't think Bellagio 5/10 game quality is quite as good (but game quality varies tremendously; a great game could crop up anywhere, as could a terrible game), and the Bellagio staff is far more annoying.

I don't know of a place where 25/50 runs on a daily basis. During the series it almost certainly will at the Bellagio, but not year-round. Also noteworthy is that Commerce is in L.A., and ITT we are talking about Vegas stuff. There has been a tremendous amount of discussion comparing Las Vegas to Los Angeles when it comes to live poker, and I think the jury is still out on which is the overall best place to live/play.

Do you guys think PLO or NLHE is going to represent the better opportunity at the WSOP this year? I'm thinking PLO.

Dudes, unfortunately I am a life nit, and have little live experience. If grinding 5/10 goes well I may grow a pair and play 10/20. I'm obviously a favorite at 10/20 but the thought of losing 5k+ in a couple hours is gross.
