good read was always a fan of the strat you would write:

1. are you still into the Boston ska scene? Im a lifetime MMB fan and am really into stuff like Big D and the Kids Table and Street Dogs; are you into this kind of stuff?

2. what are your thoughts on birth control?

3. do you think its true that they say "whatever you cannot learn, you teach"?

4. favorite starting hand NLHE?

really hard to discuss in generic terms, but I would say don't try to think about it as how to win pots without SD. Think about it as times where you are putting in money without getting to a SD, and how you could have avoided putting in that money, or put in more to win.

Basically don't just assume that you aren't battling for enough pots or spewing enough, maybe you just aren't picking the right spots or the right opponents.

non-sd lines are a zero-sum game between two opponents. if one opponents goal is to win every pot that doesn't go to SD the other player isn't going to beat him by trying to do the same.

Re: 5000th post: A WELLcome back to the strat forums

Thanks for doing the well. You've been a pain in the a** at the tables, but come across as a really cool guy here. You offered to do some strat, so I looked up my database to find some old hands vs. you. Not the most threadworthy spots, but here we go anyway.

1)
Full Tilt - $4 NL - Holdem - 8 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

UTG+1: $743.50
MP: $132.10
MP+1: $400.00
Hero (CO): $388.00
BTN: $76.00
SB: $152.00
BB: $452.60
UTG: $72.50

SB posts SB $2.00, BB posts BB $4.00

Pre Flop: ($6.00) Hero has A K

fold, UTG+1 raises to $16.00, fold, fold, Hero calls $16.00, fold, fold, fold

Flop: ($38.00, 2 players) K 9 4
UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $24.00, UTG+1 calls $24.00

Turn: ($86.00, 2 players) Q
UTG+1 checks, Hero checks

River: ($86.00, 2 players) Q
UTG+1 checks, Hero checks

Is checking back river here good vs. you? I might lose value againts JJ, TT but open myself up to get checkraise-bluffed as my line doesn't look that strong either. In the actual hand the check was good, you had quads.

2)
Full Tilt - $4 NL - Holdem - 8 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

MP: $394.00
MP+1: $130.00
CO: $74.60
BTN: $623.40
SB: $592.30
BB: $917.10
Hero (UTG): $384.00
UTG+1: $165.30

SB posts SB $2.00, BB posts BB $4.00

Pre Flop: ($6.00) Hero has 8 8

Hero raises to $12.00, fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, SB calls $10.00, BB calls $8.00

Flop: ($36.00, 3 players) 4 J 3
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $28.00, SB calls $28.00, fold

Turn: ($92.00, 2 players) 7
SB checks, Hero checks

River: ($92.00, 2 players) 7
SB bets $72.00, fold

Line ok?

3)
Full Tilt - $4 NL - Holdem - 9 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 3

Hero (BB): $424.00
UTG: $294.30
UTG+1: $427.90
MP: $382.00
MP+1: $557.90
LP: $510.50
CO: $620.60
BTN: $120.00
SB: $405.60

SB posts SB $2.00, Hero posts BB $4.00

Pre Flop: ($6.00) Hero has K A

fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, CO raises to $12.00, fold, fold, Hero raises to $42.00, CO calls $30.00

Flop: ($86.00, 2 players) J J 5
Hero bets $58.00, CO calls $58.00

Turn: ($202.00, 2 players) 7
Hero checks, CO checks

River: ($202.00, 2 players) 9
Hero bets $90.00, CO raises to $368.00, fold

Hopeless bluff?

You are villain in all three hands. You probably had me around 14/10.

Hey man great well.

What would you say are some things that would help with playing "A" game for a long time. I find myself lacking concentration at tables or even worse just tilted to a point where I can't play anymore.

I didn't realize this was up already.

* Mostly curious about all the hands you decide to play that a standard TAG doesn't play. Do you find that they are +ev? I just am not sure if it's worth the extra mouseclicks - especially when multi-tabling.

* HU MTG for rollz? (JK. I actually own a couple of starter decks, but never really got into it. Like you, whole "pay more for the good cards" really annoyed me. Yes - this was in the early days when it was just a card game.)

Nice well. I'll be back later when I have more time.

do: travel, eat well, drink good booze. pay off last of student loans, put away as much as possible for retirement, diversify retirement investments, make sure family is good financially (they are but it's nice to help out if they would need it).

buy: not much. maybe a new computer (still play on a 3 year old laptop), rent a new apartment, get a cool bicycle, maybe some additions to my golf clubs.

I would probably give a good portion of it away to a charity. Obviously not most of it, but I don't want to get totally complacent or become that guy people try to leech off of. And I think that sitting on a pile of cash is a great way to do that. But giving away a lot of it before taxes would actually see it go to some good use, and keep me from becoming fat and lazy.

I wouldn't buy cars. Hate driving in the city and don't do it often enough to need a second car to have to pay parking for. I wouldn't buy a house because the market is terrible and I don't want the responsibility or to have that much of my personal wealth tied to one thing. I wouldn't try to start a business or invest in someone's business because I don't think I have the expertise or experience to know what I'm doing.

andrewsong: boss, nuff said.

doublefly: this is the wiser, buy fun and goofy addition. Guy is on top of his **** even though he likes to goof a lot in his blog so I think he'd help keep stress levels low while still having valuable additions to the conversation.

last position is a tough call.

loco would be the best sarcastic entertainer, but I think he'd probably lose help pretty quick unless the island had booze and whores so it might not be a great long term addition. Ricky is pretty chill with a good perspective on things so I think it would be beneficial to our long term survival. Sparky you could bring your dogs (I'm a huge dog lover) which might be helpful plus you seem like a pretty active outdoorsy type guy so that could help. Adam27x is a good level-headed dude and an engineer and the more engineers the better.

In the end I'd probably hope for some combination of the above. Probably would be better off if I could get 6 2p2ers on the island instead of 3. Gotta have at least enough to play a 6max game.

Saw the Street Dogs live at fenway last month and really enjoyed them. They are a great live band, tons of energy, no pretense, and good songs. I haven't really gotten into BDantKT because I've always missed a chance to see them live and haven't gotten any of their CDs. I am a huge Streetlight Manifesto fan and their live show was awesome. Also a really big Pietasters fan and they had one of the best live shows I've ever seen in Chapel Hill when I was in college. I liked Upstanding Youth's first release but their second not so much. I know it's not really ska, but I love Flogging Molly, and though the Dropkicks are kind of fun live I'm not a big fan.

2. what are your thoughts on birth control?
I'm for it. And I'm for people having access to it. And I think parents need to more actively encourage their children/teens to use it (pill or ring for girls and condoms for guys). Put it this way, the people that are accidentally having kids because of lack of birth control are most often the people that are least ready to take care of and raise healthy (mentally and physically) children. Whether it be because of age, immaturity, income, or intelligence in general accidental kids have it tougher than planned kids. Also life becomes even more difficult on their parents, and society as a whole pays a higher cost for less benefit.

3. do you think its true that they say "whatever you cannot learn, you teach"?
no, and the last person I would want teaching me is someone that couldn't learn it themselves. I would say that the phrase "those who can't, teach" is somewhat true. Basically if you're able to master a field often teaching people that may never be able to master it might be very frustrating. Even if they come close to you they may never have that final 10% or whatever to push them to your level. Like Michael Jordan coaching, I would guess he would be a horrible coach. But I don't think that is always true, and some masters could teach their craft well.

However people that reach their peak and can't advance to the tops of their profession or trade often find teaching to be lucrative and rewarding. Sometimes your journey and failure give you a unique and valuable perspective that can help others, even if their potential is higher than your own. I think it's the proper solution to the Peter Principal. Instead of trying to tread water when you're over your head, move down to a level you're proficient at and help people along their journey.

4. favorite starting hand NLHE?
I've lost a lot of money playing T9s OOP and calling 3bets with it. It looks so pretty I just hate folding it. I used to love T8s, but it changed to T9s at some point in the last 3 years.
