You question is simply "weird" given circumstances. If villain in never folding (and we are likely to think that because of the line he took) then it doesn't matter whether he has $500 behind OR 10 MILLION, because either way a semibluff will never be "profitable"
Your probably absolutely correct. Although I have seen villain check raise top pair weak kicker in the past. But that was on the river and opponent just called and won with a weak two pair.
Another semi relevant hand I had with Vil earlier in this same session. I was oop and bet KJ on a A246T board with a missed FD Got min raised by same villain. I tanked and he seemed very weak in his entire line. Shoved and he folded showing me a ace. I said good fold and mucked.
So I was definitely thinking I could get him to fold a lot of Qx.
