Live 1/1/2

Villain is a classic maniac who will raise preflop 40% of the time, will call any 3bet after he opens up action, loves to play any two connected, etc.

Effective stack sizes are 150BB

He raises $4 UTG, and I reraised to $16 with KK. One short stack calls, putting him all in. Villain calls, and flop comes 9 2 5 rainbow. He checks, I make a pot sized $48 bet, and he raises to $120. What do I do here? Am I supposed to believe this is almost always a set?

Flat, call turn. Can be A9 or maybe TT...or maybe like 77 because maniac.

Edit

2 pair is likelier than a set IMO.

I don't see 2 pair showing up here, even from a maniac. Imo sets and straight draws (43s) are much more likely.

OP, I like your betting sizes so far. I'd seriously consider shoving here on the flop. You're ahead of most of the maniacs range. Before shoving, though, I'd prefer to have a decent read on him. Have you seen him show down hands after x/r the pfr?

With him being a maniac he can show up with literally anything. I think he think he has you beat here with a hand like A9. If you think he may be stronger with a hand like TT or JJ i would jam. Idk if this is the right line or the most profitable way to play this hand but him being a maniac he may feel committed to his TPTK or over pair. I wouldn't ever give him the credit for a set right away, because of his image alone, if you were playing vs a rock then yes but maniac never. Make him show you the nuts and then adjust. Bottom line, Id say jam.

You're not folding against a maniac here. If he does this with gutshots too, I lean towards a call. I lean towards a call generally if he's really maniac. If you have reason to think he has a hand this time, then pushing is much better because there are a lot of scare cards to come on turn. Is he maniac both post and pre? Because raising 40% pre doesn't mean crazy post.

More pre. As played, not folding. Call the c/r and play for stacks OTT.

3b flop is insane. V has lots of air & marginal hands; why would we give him a chance to fold them? Flat and let him jam the turn with his entire range.

Against a nit we can fold here knowing it's almost always a set. Against a maniac, we should be finding the best way to get all the moneys into the pot.

Unless you plan on stacking off (in which case this wouldn't be a thread) then don't pot the flop in a super dry multiway 3! pot.

Call flop, check turn and re-evaluate. Probably stacking off.

WAY more preflop! When I play 1/2, I open to $15 with KK all the time. You have a maniac who you said will call any raise after opening. I would've 3 bet to $30 minimum.

How is the 3! insane? OP didn't mention his position, but I wouldn't want other callers behind me with weak aces "because lol $4". I don't mind the amount, either. Someone else mentioned $30, but I don't think we need to 3! A 2bb raise to 15bb with only 1 (all in) caller in between.

OP, well played imo and I'm looking to get it in here. If V flopped a set, nice hand and move on.

^I meant a 3b on the flop would be insane. 3b pre is obv fine.

Just call and let the villain hang himself.

In spots like these you have to understand what your opponents biggest flaws are. Clearly this villains problem is betting to much. So just call flop and allow him to overvalue and barrel off all his 1 pair hands. Don't 3-bet and let him fold.

I'd also go way smaller on a dry flop like this.

Hes a whale. He gave us an opening to shove. We shove and try to hold on against BPNK. We call for chips.

If he calls any 3bet, shove pre.

If that was not accurate then bigger pre for sure
