yup, that's a good area from what i can remember, very little crime. also, being close to 215 is a big advantage in this city.

for anyone who wants to check it out, here's a crime map provided by metro:

I prefer the Naked City area right behind the Stratosphere...reasonable rents and walking distance to all the good strip clubs..

Dollar for dollar you can't beat the nice neighborhoods in Green Valley and the newer parts of Henderson. Just get as close to the freeway as possible. Commutes will be a breeze, especially if you've lived in CA or NY. Stay away from North Las Vegas, not that it's bad way out north (past Craig), but it's just too far from the Strip. Look at the crime map and you should notice the amount of home burglaries in Summerlin. Way over rated area if you ask me. It's gonna go down hill eventually. Being close to GVR myself, I can say that that's the area I prefer the most. And I've lived in Vegas my whole life.

I don't remember seeing anything on this specific area, so I'll ask: what about along Arville between Trop and Spring Mountain? Basically behind the Rio and a couple blocks from "Chinatown". Lots and lots of apartment and condo complexes, and they LOOK okay. No obvious signs, like bars on every window and steel gates and grafitti everywhere. Prices seemed very reasonable too.

Good location for a renter. I thought you were asking about buying. That's what I get for not reading every post. This will put you close to all the action.

** There is some gang-like activity in that area, but nothin too crazy. It's a busy area.

I believe the OP did ask about buying, I sort of sidetracked it a bit since I was just through that area so much the past few days.

Wow, the crime map is very telling. Virtually no crime in the entire Green Valley Area and Summerlin is just littered with auto and home robberies. Says a lot. Unless peeps in SUmmerlin just have more cool stuff to steal.

I'm pretty sure nothing shows up in Green Valley because that is Henderson, so it's a different jurisdiction.

Virually none, or absolutely none? Green Valley (Henderson) is not in LVMPD's jurisdiction. But I can't seem to get the map to work at all for me.

I'm using ff, it "works" for me but it doesn't actually show any crime on the map regardless of where I search, and I don't care enough to figure out why.

The best areas of Vegas are all outside of the State of Nevada.

http://citymaps.cityofhenderson.com/...jsp/wizard.jsp is the equivalent page for Henderson. Seems a little harder to use and less configurable than LVMPD's.

http://spotcrime.com/nv looks kinda useful, though it seems to be overwhelmed by the quantity of Vegas crime. Click on "Las Vegas" and it looks like it's claiming to show 2 months of crimes--well, no, it actually seems to just show the most recent couple hundred events, which is about a day. Ask it to show just the last two months of shootings, say, and it's more useful. Doing so while viewing Las Vegas (not Henderson or North Las Vegas), I see in the last 2 months there are 15 shootings north of Flamingo, and none south of Flamingo, and none west of about Cimarron. Gee--wonder why we tell people to live out west in Summerlin or south towards Green Valley/Henderson?

how far west? in general, the neighborhood starts out fairly seedy and gets nicer as you move away from the strip. It isnt the hood or anything though like around russel and arville/decatur... but its not very nice... personally, i wouldnt want to live east of buffalo.

Wow I feel lucky to be alive! I was in Vegas in January and walked alone at 10pm from Sahara all the way down the strip. Only prob was the people flickin the hookers cards! Mind you I am 6 2 and 300 pounds! Caught the bus back that runs up and down the strip. That was one of the highlights of my trip. The driver was an absolute commedian, cracking jokes and dissing people who werent aware of it. When a stop came up he would announce it in the most jaded, over it voice, the whole bus was in stitches laughing. The next night I walked alone to Stratosphere and back, then back down the srtrip and over to hooters casino. no probs.

One thing that happened a few times was being approached at odd times for money. I was in the parking lot of a Walmart one morning about 11 am and a woman about 30 came up and asked me if I could spare some money. She looked quite normal and well dressed, not at all like a hooker or drug addict. This happened two more times with relatively normal looking people. Sign of the times maybe? Plus when driving around I was asked by other drivers if I wanted new wheels for my rental car 3 times and offered 2 pshychic readings and sexual services! I drove all over Vegas and I reckon the nicest area to live is Summerlin area, especially if you are into golf. or Green Valley ranch is also nice. There are other pockets of high class areas dotted around the place but not as well designed as Summerlin. I couldnt believe the prices of houses in January and they have dropped even further now. You will get a bargain Im sure.

Not a bad area at all. No "people flickin the hookers cards" over there.

Get a good, qualified real estate agent with at least 10 years experience if you're buying.

A good indicator imo to gauge whether an area in Vegas is good or not (for you) is to visit the convenience stores in that particular area (at least a few and at different times - day and night). If you don't like the type of people who are there.. you probably won't like living around there. Not 100% accurate by any means. But a good place to start.

^^ good tip.

bump. I'm going to vegas after thanksgiving to look for a place to buy. After living there for the last 2 wsop's I know that I wanna live closer to the strip than not. What are the best area's relatively close to the strip? I'm looking at stuff in the 150k range but of course I'm not expecting that to be the mean price of the neighborhood. I've heard good things about Spanish Oaks off of Sahara. Are there any other pockets of gated communities like this relatively close to the strip? Thanks.

PS- If someone can PM me the # of a good real estate agent who has been doing this since before the market crashed I would be very appreciative.
