What are the best/worst areas of Las Vegas to live in? What are the best/worst areas of Las Vegas to live in?

I have never seen 215 bumper to bumper (aka, SEATTLE TRAFFIC). Sometimes it will get a bit congested around the Decatur exit due to the construction, but you always get through it pretty quickly. I commute daily from Windmill, exit 8, to Jones, exit 14.

As far as times, it's fairly difficult to pin down regular traffic patterns as shifts are not as regular in Las Vegas as they are in other cities. But it's never been so bad as to really make me sit up and take notice and think "oh, I should avoid 215 during such and such a time." I can't really think of a time where I've had to go below 40mph.

I have seen I-15 get pretty disgusting, but I hardly ever use 15 so whatever.

When I used to wake up early to go UNLV for class in the mornings, 215 eastbound from Durango to Decatur was a parking lot basically. I agree with divides though that the rush hour here is so wierd since it's from 5 to 10 and then 2 to 6. Some people have 9-5 jobs but most of the city doesn't. Either way, Vegas is the best place to live hands down! I wouldn't move back to NY if you paid me.

yeah, the only time i've EVER seen the 215 bumper to bumper was last year, day after thanksgiving at about 9:00 a.m. and i thought it was probably just due to the shopping frenzy, other than that, i have to agree that vegas is definitely tops out of any other major city for congestion free interstate driving.

the 15 can get ****ty during "rush hours" but it's still nothing like MSP or chicago or something.

also, does anybody else think that, for the most part, vegas drivers on average drive slower than the speed limit on the 215/15/95 etc. or am i alone in that? of course there are people going super fast and a lot drive average, but i've never seen a place where so many people drive below the speed limit.

combination of ppl being old, being unfamiliar with the area or both imo

i dunno, don't really agree with this at all. i mean, half of the people drive 20 below because they have no idea where they are going, but in the passing lane its just the usual 70-75 mph

as for how busy 215 is, its about half as bad as 15. basically, any areas with construction are a nightmare. everywhere that's free and clear is usually fine.

as others have said, rush hour is strange. i hate taking the highway any time after 2 and strangely the congestion never seems to let up until like 10pm. and it can be bad around those times too if there's construction on the particular part you are driving.

this seems like "duh" common knowledge but construction around here is rampant.

On the south side, I-215 can back up heading from Henderson toward I-15 at 5pm. Too many people trying to get off onto I-15 (which is itself backed up) and then construction just past I-15 on I-215 itself. But it's only the segment from about the airport exit to the other side of the construction that backs up, and it's worse some days than others.

Visit traffic.com and maps.google.com and www.nvfast.org/trafficcameras.html at times you're interested and look for yourself. Right now I see just a segment of yellow on the inside lane of I-215 exactly where I state above... just before the construction on I-215 as you head from Henderson past I-15.

Now... I-15... that's different.

I agree that Vegas drivers seem to drive incredibly slow. And this is way off the strip during random hours of the day. My friend goes the speed limit and he's constantly worried he's speeding because he's whizzing by people.

im going to vegas in about 6 weeks or so, im planning to stay for 2-3 months and ill probably stay at a motel right next to the strip.

however after reading this thread i see everybody seems to be saying that near the strip is just a ghetto. why is that? could i not go outside after its dark or something.
what should i expect?

the motel is right behind MGM grand and its basically the cheapest way i see to live there without renting an apartment or whatever, should i just find something else or what? remember im from iceland so i dont know **** about this stuff lol, we dont have many crimes and no "ghettos".

its very hit or miss.close to the strip. You certainly would not want to be walking around near (but not on the strip)... I wouldnt just randomly go book a hotel and assume its going to be in an acceptable area just because its "right off the strip"

I only read the first 50 or so posts, but just some food for thought: You can most likely build a pool exactly the way you'd like it for less then you'd pay for the house already having it. A pool is really only a hole lined with concrete, designed, with added water management and filtering. The value added to a home with a nice pool is going to be way more then the cost of the pool. Labor is... cheap... in the valley.

In the end it will be cheaper and you'll be happier if you buy the house that you love that may be a bit barebones and then add what you want. This includes the backyard. It helps if you have a designers streak.

oh and as a young male who lives here. If I were to buy a house I'd buy in the southern Green Valley area. You'll have a good mix of convenience, safe living, decent schools, and local entertainment. You can get from the Green Valley Parkway exit on 215 to the strip pretty fast, so anything within a few minute drive to 215 will get you there fast. When the I-15 expansion is finished it should make getting north that much easier. Also most of major surface streets down south are new, well built and fast. You can cover alot of city going 55 on low traffic light/low traffic streets.

Exactly.

On Flamingo east of the strip where the limit is 45mph, the average speed seems to be 30mph regardless of traffic.

Im often weaving in and out of traffic like I just robbed a bank.

The thing that I dont understand is why its necessary to have a minimum of 50 speedbumps in any given parking lot, what with all the slowpokes around here.

now that is some funny shti right there, i was just driving up Decatur and the speed limit was 45 EVERY SINGLE CAR was going 30/35 and i was weaving in and out of cars going 45 and i though it felt like i was speeding away from the cops in a chase !!! Damn slow drivers!!!

I've never had any problems on the surface streets but this thread did cause me to realize how many people on the highways go below the speed limit for no apparent reason. That's not even to say that it's very many people that do it but it seems like it's impossible to drive the speed limit in the right lane because there's always the one ******* out there doing 55.

I assume you mean the ones on tropicana east of the strip? they aren't exactly nice, but its not dangerous or anything. you get a lot of white trash + mexicans(poor people) there I think.

Unless you are a student, avoid the UNLV area.
