Am I missing something?

Yep, holding the kicker when dealt 3OAK in TDB is more profitable than throwing it away as your odds of hitting a 4oak are just as likely whether you toss the kicker or not but when you hit 4OAK w/ kicker it pays 2000 credits vs 800 credits for 4OAK w/o kicker

Oops I thought it was double double bonus.

You say odds of hitting 4 of a kind are same whether you hold the kicker or not. If you discard it aren't you then getting 2 chances to hit the 4oak instead of just 1?

Day 3

Sorry for lack of update guys; I tried to post this update yesterday night, but couldn't connect to the forums for some reason. Instead, I went back down to play and we had another example of timing working out great! You'll read about that on Day 4...

We start the day with room service again. Japanese breakfast for my dad, corned beef hash for me.

I then head to the gym to train, make sure I get it out of the way. When I get back, it's almost lunch time and I elect to skip lunch given the excess/unhealthy calories I've already consumed.

Finally got a trip draw to come in!

I run generally good and step up to 10 play.

I walk all the way over to the Encore ballroom to register for me and my dad for the VP tournament. It's a far walk, we're definitely going to have to drive over there tomorrow so my dad doesn't have to walk far.

Tournament credentials.

Due to not eating lunch, I'm starving around 5pm and we order... room service again. Shocker for you all, I know.

Kung Pao chicken and baby bok choi for me, steak salad for my dad, some salt and pepper shrimp to share.

Afterwards, I play what ends up being a short night time session, given my plan is to hit the gym again tomorrow.

Once again, another trip draw comes in. Sweet!

Since I'm running good, time for more 10 play. Good thing.

Slot number 9 comes in; guess I should congratulate myself for playing 10 play

Overall, just a good, solid day.

Day 3 result- +2k

Odds of hitting 4oak are about twice as good, but that 4oak will only come with a kicker about 1/4 of those times. If you hold the kicker, your chances of making 4oak go down to 1/47, but every time you hit it it'll be 5x as big.

You have to take the sum of the EV of chance of making (4oak + 4oak w/kicker) if you draw without a kicker, and compare to EV of drawing with a kicker. It works out better in the long run to always hold the kicker in TDB.

You can rent those Rascals (electric scooter). Call down, some hotels have them, and I'm sure you'd get it comped. If they don't have any, there are places in town that rent them for a reasonable fee and they bring it to the hotel for you. I've had back issues off and on and looked into it.

Most of Day 4

So I apologize in advance, but this will be the last update until likely Sun. We're leaving tomorrow and I'm just taking a break waiting for food.

We order a breakfast room service (surprise), and I get in a quick session before the gym. Stuck 1K in 5 min and hit nothing.

After the gym, I come back and dad and I grab a room service lunch.

Burgers for both of us; mushroom and swiss for dad, bacon, cheddar, mushroom, fried egg for me. Side of fries, of course.

After that, it's off to the VP tournament!

Pretty nice spread in the tournament ballroom; they had a shuffle board and pool table, massage girls and a bar.

My dad goes first, both rounds back to back. Unfortunately, with the format of the tourney (basically, play as fast as you can and try and hit something, credits don't roll over), my dad is at a major disadvantage. He doesn't hit any big hands.

There's a round between us, so my dad goes to play slots at the Encore while I watch. Then, I come back for my round 1.

Then, round 2.

This was actually kind of a nerve-wracking experience. There's huge incentive to play fast, and the optimal strategy IMO is basic strategy, weighted towards being aggressive for royals (say, hold 1 high card instead of 2 unsuited). I played as fast as I could, but the combo of slight deviation in strategy coupled with the game being DDB instead of TDB meant I made some mistakes. Nothing major, but it cost me time. That said, I know I played faster than 99% of the field, possibly 100% (picture a bunch of older, rich folk).

Those scores are nothing special. I hit a quad both times but no big hands, and I saw better scores on every round. At least I'm in the running for day 2.

We head back to the Wynn to play.

OK, cool.

And... I proceed to run cold. I end up stuck 5k before dinner. We head Red 8 for dinner, plus I need to blow off some steam.

Shu Mai and Oxtail soup, lobster with black bean sauce, crispy pork belly and baby bok choy.

We play on, and I continue to run like ****. At my low point I'm down 10K on the day. This is the best thing I hit during the post-dinner session, again with no kicker. I took a pic out of frustration.

I watch my dad for a bit, and we get into an argument about the math of the game. My father has never been the most logical person when it comes to gambling math. I can explain probability, EV etc until I'm blue in the face but he just won't or doesn't get it. So we get into an EV discussion which ends up turning into a small argument (would have been a massive fight in the past, my dad has mellowed a bit and I've matured and plus I don't want to get into an argument given his condition) so I decide to just call it a night and go upstairs.

My plan was to post an update, but for some reason the forum wasn't working. Instead, I figure **** it, I'm here to play, what difference does it make now or tomorrow. I put on a red shirt (luck, why not, can't hurt) and go downstairs.

My machines are taken by a rude couple who have been here all week. A couple of times I've come by and they have all the machines tied up but usually only playing one of them. They're high rollers betting 5$ a credit, but still. One time I **** you not they literally had their little yappy dog sitting in one of the chairs. Like something from a Beverly Hills movie. I, in turn, consider it rude to tell them to shove off, so I don't. I pull up to the spin poker machine by my dad. It's a 9/7 TDB machine, but the variance is insane. Whatever, it can't be any worse than anything else at this point.

I elect to play 7 lines at a time, for 35$ a push. I burn through 500$ in 5 min while my dad hits another jackpot. Then...

Spoiler:
I make a ****ing score.

To be continued...

When you get dealt a 4 of a kind that can't improve with a kicker have you ever thought about holding all 5 cards instead of drawing the one lone card? It's the way I was taught to play incase there was a possible glitch in the machine nothing would be voided and since you can't improve by drawing that would be optimal strategy.

(slight derail but Leon you seem to know a lot about VP)

I'm not exactly sure how to calculate this, but if you start with 5000 credits, play 5 credits per pull, and play at some defined rate (12 pulls per minute is 1 pull every 5 seconds), and an expected return of 95-99% depending on the machine, can you calculate the average time to going bust?

I'm sure there's a way to calculate this (or something like it) but I don't what it is. Perhaps in the statistics forum someone would be able to answer?
