Most of Day 4
So I apologize in advance, but this will be the last update until likely Sun. We're leaving tomorrow and I'm just taking a break waiting for food.
We order a breakfast room service (surprise), and I get in a quick session before the gym. Stuck 1K in 5 min and hit nothing.
After the gym, I come back and dad and I grab a room service lunch.
Burgers for both of us; mushroom and swiss for dad, bacon, cheddar, mushroom, fried egg for me. Side of fries, of course.
After that, it's off to the VP tournament!
Pretty nice spread in the tournament ballroom; they had a shuffle board and pool table, massage girls and a bar.
My dad goes first, both rounds back to back. Unfortunately, with the format of the tourney (basically, play as fast as you can and try and hit something, credits don't roll over), my dad is at a major disadvantage. He doesn't hit any big hands.
There's a round between us, so my dad goes to play slots at the Encore while I watch. Then, I come back for my round 1.
Then, round 2.
This was actually kind of a nerve-wracking experience. There's huge incentive to play fast, and the optimal strategy IMO is basic strategy, weighted towards being aggressive for royals (say, hold 1 high card instead of 2 unsuited). I played as fast as I could, but the combo of slight deviation in strategy coupled with the game being DDB instead of TDB meant I made some mistakes. Nothing major, but it cost me time. That said, I know I played faster than 99% of the field, possibly 100% (picture a bunch of older, rich folk).
Those scores are nothing special. I hit a quad both times but no big hands, and I saw better scores on every round. At least I'm in the running for day 2.
We head back to the Wynn to play.
OK, cool.
And... I proceed to run cold. I end up stuck 5k before dinner. We head Red 8 for dinner, plus I need to blow off some steam.
Shu Mai and Oxtail soup, lobster with black bean sauce, crispy pork belly and baby bok choy.
We play on, and I continue to run like ****. At my low point I'm down 10K on the day. This is the best thing I hit during the post-dinner session, again with no kicker. I took a pic out of frustration.
I watch my dad for a bit, and we get into an argument about the math of the game. My father has never been the most logical person when it comes to gambling math. I can explain probability, EV etc until I'm blue in the face but he just won't or doesn't get it. So we get into an EV discussion which ends up turning into a small argument (would have been a massive fight in the past, my dad has mellowed a bit and I've matured and plus I don't want to get into an argument given his condition) so I decide to just call it a night and go upstairs.
My plan was to post an update, but for some reason the forum wasn't working. Instead, I figure **** it, I'm here to play, what difference does it make now or tomorrow. I put on a red shirt (luck, why not, can't hurt) and go downstairs.
My machines are taken by a rude couple who have been here all week. A couple of times I've come by and they have all the machines tied up but usually only playing one of them. They're high rollers betting 5$ a credit, but still. One time I **** you not they literally had their little yappy dog sitting in one of the chairs. Like something from a Beverly Hills movie. I, in turn, consider it rude to tell them to shove off, so I don't. I pull up to the spin poker machine by my dad. It's a 9/7 TDB machine, but the variance is insane. Whatever, it can't be any worse than anything else at this point.
I elect to play 7 lines at a time, for 35$ a push. I burn through 500$ in 5 min while my dad hits another jackpot. Then...
To be continued...
