It's a personal choice, but for me - playing sober players who play all day every day versus drunk people on vacation, it really could not be simpler. I've had decent results against the older regs at Orleans or Red Rocks or Santa Fe Station, but they pale compared to the donation time warp at the Mirage, where drunk versions of 2004's greatest poker wizards can't wait to unload their chips at me.

I hadn't realized that the locals were any better than the tourists, on average.

I like the strip. I also like off-strip.

Really sorry that O'Sheas is gone. Playing there, and having the cheap eats in the back, was a blast! I'm glad to have the memories of it though.

Taking money from drunks right on the strip itself...... memories.....

I understand how great it is to find a Vegas Red Rock type room that's basically full of weak regulars ...but why in the world would u spill the beans on here?

It's not that big a deal, but there's no positive to your wallet that can come from it. Maybe RR picks up 1 to 10 more sharks..Everything changes so fast in our poker world..

Night games at Red Rock can be damn good....day game on the other hand, stay away...don't bother showing up before 5 pm.

I really don't think there that this is a secret to anyone that lives here or visits on a regular basis.

and I do think the game moves around quite a bit in a far as the action goes... so then there's that.

I'm responding as a frequent visitor form California who always has at least one off strip meal per visit.

In the end, it sounds like there is a lot of "Angry Old Man" syndrome in this thread.

Yes, there are absolutely gems off strip (that's why I eat there, duh), but let's not kid ourselves. The strip provides some of the highest concentration of great fine dining options in the country.

Your complaint about food costs isn't about the restaurants, you are complaining about your pockets not being deep enough.

Similarly, when you complain about the clubs and the music, you are just doing 2 things:

A) sounding like your parents who insist that there is no good music anymore and young people today suck

B) You, deep down inside, would love to hook up with the hot 25 yr old from the club, but you know in your current state, you have no shot. So you bash them instead.

Accept change. Don't life nit. And you will have much happier trips.

Cheers,

S

Maybe I am an "Angry Old Man" since I am 40 and married with kids. It changes how you can spend your time or even make the time to enjoy the features offered by the tourism industry.

The restaurants on the Strip are great for an occasional splurge, much like tourists that come here are doing, but when you live here it is a waste of money.

You can find comparable meals at a much lower price away from the tourist corridor. You are paying a massive premium to eat that meal at the high end Strip resorts simply because of the real estate and monopolistic attitude.

I would rather go to Hugo's Cellar at 4Queens than any restaurant on the Strip. That probably just furthers the argument that I am an old man.

I get what you are saying though. Las Vegas is what you want it to be, especially as a tourist. If you want to come here and eat 5* restaurants and stay in top suites then it is here for you and the city needs that. Do whatever you want when you come here, it is your vacation. I just think after two Strip visits (before I moved here) I was already over it and started staying downtown or at locals casinos.

I already did that, and I married one of them. Even 11 years later she is closer to 25 than my own age. If I am going to be characterized as an angry old man I might as well end the post with a shameless brag.

And as far as tourist games being soft compared to local games this is not true I have lost more on the strip vs off it and I have some very good friends that are very very good players and when they visit they crush the games on the strip as "tourists".

No sir!!

I characterize you as a winner in the game called life!!!!

Basically, there are two type of rejections.

You seem to be someone who can afford to eat at Joel Robuchon and tap the 25 yr old but choose not to. That's a true rejection from a WINNER.

Someone who says they would never want to eat at a place like Joel Robuchon anyway when they can't afford it is more like sour grapes.

Cheers,

Maybe it's just my perspective - I play at Commerce and the Bike, and the strip is light years friendlier, drunker, and softer than either. Off strip places, while certainly softer than SoCal, are more reminiscent to me of the grumpy regs back home.

If you're an angry old nit you can eat at places on the Strip that aren't the most expensive, play in rooms that offer $2 an hour comps and you won't spend much on food.

As for locals, they're everywhere. They will play at the fancier rooms for obvious reasons, others seek out rooms with higher rake or places like Mandalay Bay because they think more fish play there, and some prefer to play away from the Strip.

One thing I like about the Strip is if you want to play PLO or limit hold'em higher than 2/4 or 4/8, or something else besides NL, you can find those games on the Strip. Red Rock has 2/5 NL but if you don't live close to that place, your closest option is likely to be the Strip. Off Strip places tend to only have 1-2 NL, 2-4 limit and not much else

Well, I guess you got me then.

However, my post wasn't aimed at the fact that I couldn't eat, play, stay and enjoy the atmosphere the strip has to offer. It was merely a choice I am making now, whereas in the past I always chose to stay there, eat at Nove, Bouchon, etc.

I do very much enjoy the variety of games and tournaments offered there, as I did point out in my original post, but for the "day to day" activities of waking up and grabbing a coffee, taking a drive and exploring the rest of the valley, shops, restaurants, etc., I am finding myself enjoying the 'local' aspect of being here than just feeling like a tourist on a quick 3/4 day balls out vacation.
I don't know what it is, but just chalked it up to being here so many times, that the 'novelty' of strip itself has started to wear off.

I guess I can compare it to Niagara Falls in a way, which is close to where I'm originally from. Once you've been there every summer for 15-20 straight years growing up, the whole "wow factor" starts to wear off.
Nothing to do with money, or not being able to afford going there and enjoying the tourist restaurants on Clifton Hill.
And, that doesn't take away the beauty of it either. It's still an amazing site to see, just something easily taken for granted.

In summery, yes, you are correct, I'm not a high roller, and have to be responsible when visiting LV, but for the money I do have to spend, I'd much rather come for 2 weeks than for 4-5 days living like a 'balla'....just because it's such an awesome place as a whole. Strip and all.

Hahah, btw, the irony doesn't escape me that I called people out for being angry old man in a long post using an angry old man tone......

I think we all agree on, the point isn't that the strip sucks.

It's more that, there are other awesome parts of Vegas beyond the strip. (For example, kabuto FTW!!!) and that as we take more trips, we begin to discover and enjoy those also.

Cheers,

S

You are really quite the arrogant putz sometimes, aren't you? Just because someone doesn't like the same crap you do doesn't make them angry old men. I didn't like most of the crap you talk about all the time when I was 18, or 25, or any other time of my life.

Nobody came off sounding like a life nit or an angry old man; rather, people seemed to be sharing their opinions, and a cool byproduct of those opinions were people sharing tips on places they like and getting to share fond memories

wish your post was just a level; but instead, just a derail

You mean you didn't enjoy being a baller and paying $400 for a $30 bottle of vodka to impress a vapid skank in high heels? Woo-hoo Vegas baby!

Ehh.... Not sure how to tell you, but if you can't chill out and instead need to get angry about some post on a poker forum and feel the need to call someone an "arrogant putz"......or refer to activities you don't do as "crap".

Then you are an angry old man. =P

We try to make our society a better place and we don't use sexist terms like skank.

What you and your use of the term implies is that only the males are allowed to express a desire for physical encounters while it's somehow not ok for the females to do the same.

Please do not derail the nice discussion, or perhaps you can move your hatred of woman to a Taliban discussion board since I'm sure there are lots of people who will agree with your view of woman there. =]
