I'll be heading to The Meadows on Thursday for my annual WSOP trip. Some of you may recall I was there almost the entire WSOP last summer with my family in a rental house as I played and did research for an upcoming book on poker and the WSOP.

This year I'll be sans family and trying to best my 63rd finish in last year's Monster Stack while also doing some boots-on-the-ground reporting for my current employer, D.C.-based Taxpayers Protection Alliance, for a series on the taxpayer implications of Las Vegas Stadium.

So the trip will be a mix of business and pleasure and I'm still trying to plan my poker itinerary as only the Monster Stack is set in stone. I'm tempted to try my hand at the $1,500 PLO8, which I bombed out of last year, but for which I feel my game is now more prepared. However, Day 3 would coincide with Day 1B of the Monster Stack, but that would be a good problem to have, wouldn't it?

Otherwise, I'm looking to play $400 Wynn tournaments, maybe the $250 Big O at GN, etc.

Had to do some work to start the trip, but with a view like this I can't complain:



Met a former colleague who now works for the Review Journal for dinner at Grimaldi's at Palazzo (those free pizza vouchers they send you for your birthday are the nuts) then headed back to the WSOP for some 10-20 O8. Won about $150 though it felt like a loss given the fishy action.

Then I tried a $275 PLO8 satellite and faced off against Leif Force and Robert Williamson III. My A346 no good against A29T and I headed to bed.

So I'm not playing the WSOP PLO8 event and instead will play $400 NLHE at Wynn or $475 razz at B. Before heading out for breakfast this morning I played a little VP at Rio and hit this:

Since I was playing the Monster today I decided for good karma I'd get my bad hands out of the way Friday. So I played the $475 Razz at Binion's. Of course, I got hands like this:



Busted before dinner break and tried a satellite to get in on the cheap. Continuing my trend of absolutely bombing out of satellites the past two summers I came up empty.

Thought I'd avoid a line at 10:30 last night, but that was not to be:



Now I'm refreshed and ready to start the path to the final table.

Last summer I lasted past dinner break of Day 3 of Monster Stack. This year I was out in 80 minutes.

I chipped up early to 18k, but this young Asian woman was playing very LAGgy. She had run people out of pots, including me. Literally I think she played 75 percent of pots.

We're playing 50/100. UTG+1 makes it 275, she flats in the hijack and I make it 1,100 from the BB with QQ.

Raiser folds and she makes it 3,500. At this point I think I either have to fold or just shove (16k effective). I decide to shove. She has AA.

Got up over 50k, but then a guy calls my pot after he limped. I've got AAK2 vs. KQJ8 and we get it in on a rainbow flip of A8T. He blinks the queen on the turn and I go home.

Like another laggard, I’m going to do some updates of an old, unfinished trip report on my 2019 WSOP trip. I figure less pressure if I get lazy again.

Anyway, I’m about to fly out this morning for a Sunday-Thursday trip. Barring any delays, I should arrive at 12:30 and plan to late reg the $800 at WSOP. If I run into any delays I’ll probably play the $400 PLO8 at Orleans.

Regardless, I’m going to squeeze as many tournaments as possible into a four day trip!

First win of the trip. Somehow manage to score a window seat on exit row with a B19 boarding position. Look at that leg room!

I thought the line to register for the $800 at 1 pm wouldn’t be so bad. I thought wrong.

If you thought this ticket entitled me to a seat at Table 238, Seat 3, you’d be wrong. I have to wait in another long line for a seat assignment. Why issue me a ticket with this listed then?

I doubled up on the second hand and was off to the races, obtaining a 350k stack at one point before bagging 170k for tomorrow.

The bubble broke in Level 19 and we ended up with 450 left out of 3,700~ starters.

One WSOP tournament, one cash. That’s how you start a trip!
