Re: Taxi Longhauling

Out of about 20 cab rides back and forth between strip and the airport over the years, I've been long hauled twice, both times from the airport to the Venetian/ Mirage area via the tunnel. The first time didn't know any better it was one of our first visits. The second time it happened was just last year and we realized it about 5 minutes into the ride and it was kind of awkward. We didn't really say anything though, only gave him a $1 tip. In hindsight that in itself was obviously way too much and not really any punishment, wish I had read this thread before then.

That long haul added about $10 or 80% to the fair and really didn't seem any faster then the cheaper way. Before that last trip I had gained confidence in vegas cabbies since for so many years they went the proper way without anything said. All that confidence went right out the window with just one trip.

Another poster said 80% of the time the cabbie ask which way to go. In my expereince that is way off. I'd estimate we've been asked that no more then 4 times out of the 20.

Going to Monte Carlo, is Swenson to Tropicana the best route from the airport?

How much are limos from the airport to the strip (Venetian) approx? There's 7 of us so I'm thinking it could be cheaper than separate cabs

Re: Taxi Longhauling

Add this bill to your longhaul....

Taxis want to cement $3 credit card fee for fares

The average Las Vegas cab fare last year was $13.52, according to the authority. The $3 fee works out to an average 22 percent surcharge.

fyp

I mean, ****, if longhauling happens as much as people say it does, you might as well just preprint one of these and just have it filled out already.

Remember to snap a cell phone photo of the driver's license and taxicab license plate. That is, if it's not all blurry from him hastily backing down and speeding off.

Re: Taxi Longhauling

Just came back from Vegas a couple days ago.
Took the cab with my GF from the Excalibur to the airport. Asked at the info counter in Excalibur what kind of price we could expect and what route we should ask for. We didn't like to get scr*wed.

So in the cab we ask for the airport by tropicana. We arrive perfectly on time in what seems the shortest/ cheapest route. The price was $10.30 and we decide to give him 13 bucks.
What followed left a bad taste in our mouth.

The cab driver counted the money. We weren't expecting to be thanked extensively or so but he said nothing and looked at us angry like we just took a dump in his backseat.

**** you cab driver, if that ain't enough? what is?

Re: Taxi Longhauling

About 10 years ago I was in Vegas on business and a coworker and I were in a cab. We were making small talk with the driver who asked where we were from. I said New York. He told me people from New York don't tip well. So I asked him what he thought a good tip was. He told me 40%. Other than that ridiculous comment he was fine. He got 20% which is my standard tip.

Ya the last cab I rode in that you could pay via CC, I noticed it had buttons on the screen where you could automatically tip 20% 40% or even 60%. What on God's green earth would inspire even the biggest sucker to tip 40% for a cab ride, much less 60%?

Yeah, something similar happened to me once, the guy took the best route but then was completely mad at what I thought was a very reasonable tip.

These people are out of control and ruin many a Vegas experience, something has to be done. I wonder if the taxi companies know how many people are put off by their policies and keep taxi rides to a bare minimum. Bad business practices imo.

Re: Taxi Longhauling

I usually tip 30% for longer drives and 50% for short drives which I feel is somewhat standard. Tipping taxis is different then restaurants often times if you give them a short ride it's terrible for them as they have to go sit in a line again just to get a fare (these lines can be superrrr long sometimes too) which is why I compensate them better for such rides.
