They will bring you a fridge for no charge at V/P, if they don't, tell them you need it for your medicine.

I just flat out tell them I tip well for free upgrades, if it's available at no charge your getting it after using that line.

I'm heading over in just over a week for just under 3weeks. The first week I'm staying at Palazzo and all I want is a high floor so that's not a problem.

The other 10 nights I'm at the Wynn with another guy who's coming to play poker too. What kind of upgrade should I be shooting for here?

I was thinking maybe $50 or even $100 is more appropriate than $20 here, especially for 10 nights. What should I be shooting for?

Just a high floor looking over the golf course, are the panoramic view rooms double queen too?

Thanks in advance

Why does everyone want to screw up the $20 trick?
It is really simple. You slip them a $20 bribe and you get extra stuff.
So you start thinking maybe $50, or even $100 ...
Well, if you are thinking like that you got no business attempting the $20 trick and screwing it all up -- just pay what ever the legit charge is for what ever you want and leave the $20 trick alone.

Yeah that's a good idea, the $20 doesn't work so well in high end properties for obvious reasons.

I'll pay an average of $10 a night for an upgrade that would prob cost me $100 or I could just pay the full amount....

If I was staying in Harrahs or staying for a couple nights I'd use $20. I'm not though I'm staying for 10 nights, so I'll use what I think gives me a better shot and is equivalent to the $20 that people give when they are staying for a couple nights.

Thanks for your help though

The equivalent to $20 is TWENTY DOLLARS.
Do you think the minimum wage desk clerk at a "high end" property has a different value system then the minimum wage desk clerk at a "low end" property?

The clerks are putting the money in their pocket, THE "COST" OF THE UPGRADE IS MEANINGLESS IN THIS TRANSACTION, because it costs the clerk NOTHING.

Yap, if by obvious reasons you mean they have better auditing and monitoring going on, then Yes you are correct. Which means you flipping out your ben franklin isn't going to work any better than a sawbuck.

The clerk isn't going to lose their job over 100 any quicker than they would for 20. And if they can do something, they will do it for 20 just as quick as for a 100.

It only means that next time, if the clerk is able to do something, she is going to remember bozo with the franklin and might try to hold out when the next guy offers twenty.

Is it not more hassle to allocate a room for 10 nights upgraded than it is for 2?

I was just taking this into consideration with my 'tip'. I've seen more reports of it failing at high end properties with $20 and working with $50.

I also read on another forum a reply from the guy that works in the hotel industry. His post said basically said the opposite of what you're saying.

Again thanks for your input

No problem. Something tells me you are going to wind up with a "free" coffee maker in your room for $100.

Haha that's why I asked which kind of room would be the best to ask for. We're not paying for the room anyway, it's part of a WSOP package.

I'm only gonna shoot for a high floor in Palazzo so am not gonna throw them $100 for that, I'll just ask nicely and give them $20 if they can do that.

I was more concerned about the 10nights at the Wynn and possibly getting a Tower Suite or something. I was just working off the average stay seems to be 2/3 nights so $100 seemed to be proportionate.

I get what you're saying that $20 is $20, I just think for longer stays they might be more inclined to appreciate a little more.

I don't need a coffeemaker though, just a fridge

If your room is part of a package the clerk's hands are probably going to be tied, they won't be able to upgrade because the room is part of the package and can't be changed.

At the Wynn, there seems to be about equal success in getting a tower suite upgrade with $20, $50, and just having a good story and asking nicely.

Are there any times NOT to try the $20 trick?

Specific example I'm thinking of...

I'm staying at the Venetian July 4th weekend. Booked at the normal rate of $239/night but am planning to play 6 hrs of poker per night to get it lowered to the poker rate of $89/night (they adjust it at checkout). Would doing the $20 trick and getting an upgrade potentially void my ability to get the poker rate at the end?

Just not sure how the comp upgrades "work" in their systems. When a different person checks me out, will they see I'm in a nicer room than the standard one and since they're not privvy to the $20 exchange, assume they need to charge me the difference each night?

From the Venetian website:

"Lastly, any upgrades you have on a suite will have to be paid in addition to the poker rate. In other words, if you booked your suite for $300 for a Tuesday night and you are offered a $50 upgrade charge, even though the total for your suite is still less than $400, we can only reduce the original booking to $89, and the $50 upgrade charge will have to be added on top of that, for a total of $139."

Just not sure if they mean "official/on-the-books" upgrades as opposed to "$20 trick/off-the-books" upgrades.

"$20 trick/off-the-books" upgrades.

Read that 3 times, I kind of bolded the part you should pay attention to.

The bad news is these off-the-books $20 upgrades only occur when there are rooms available that will probably go empty anyways.
I'm thinking July 4th weekend at the V, this is not going to happen.

What do u mean by that? I have a booking for 13 days and i ll stay another 10 in top of that. I ll pull the trick for sure when I first go there and I was thinking maybe 20$ was too little for such a long stay. I ve read in this thread that most people are highly opposed with giving more and I sincerely dont know what to do.

Yeah I was worried about that last year when I won a package staying at Caesars. One of the other guys called me when I landed to say he had a classic room which wasn't too pleasing.

I got to the hotel sandwiched $50 and asked if I could possibly be upgraded to the Augustus Tower. She clicked a few buttons and I had a nice high floor room in Augustus Tower.

I just feel that given the feedback I've read from ppl in the hotel industry and with the general attitude in Vegas. I think that by throwing a little more than $20 down gives me a better shot, if not no big deal I get my money back.

Obviously this is just for an upgrade I'm not gonna go and throw $100 to get a high floor, hence originally asking which room to ask for on upgrade.

Yeah was thinking the same thing anyway. I guess I just ASSUMED that the upgrades are off-the-books. So when a person checks you out, you can confirm that there would be no indication that the room you stayed in was upgraded beyond the one you paid for?

A buddy and I are heading to Ceaser's Palace Saturday June 12.
Dont really remember what room we have booked so I will ask the clerk.
When she tells us I will ask if there are any complimetary rooms availible. Perhaps an Industry Suite while showing a couple of 20s.

.

In the Venetian thread in the B&M forum, they noted that there MAY be blackout dates for getting the poker/DSE rate over that weekend. I'd doublecheck.

And anyway, I don't know what the Venetian could or would upgrade you to
that's worth paying for (either in upgrade charge or bribe). Paying the $20 bribe to get a higher floor is LOL hi-larious, while paying it for a room with a view is still kinda lame since you can get one of those by asking nicely, or just sucking it up and enjoying the view of the HVAC units rather than the Mirage driveway.

And I don't know how they do the accounting. I guess the point of my post is that none of their cheaper upgrades are worth much to begin with, and it isn't like your $20 bribe is going to get you a Piazza suite for July 4.

Anyone had any experience attempting this at NYNY? I know it's not the biggest hotel, but I haven't been to vegas for over 2 years so I don't have any good comp offers and I enjoyed staying there last time I went.

(they don't have NYNY listed on the $20 trick website)

Yes, my friend tried it with $100 (yes, yes, ruining the $20 trick) specifically because he wanted the suites with the hot tubs in the living area. This was unsuccessful and she said she could give him a room with a strip view. Not sure if she thought she'd get $100 for that, but he basically said, "No thanks," and took back the $100. She DID appear to be checking though, and said that there were none of the upgraded suites available, aside from the strip-view ones. Not sure if that was true or not.
