About 4 years ago my mom reached diamond status with Harrah's by being a slot junky. At the same time, I signed up for a card with Sandia Casino in Albuquerque, which has no affiliation with Harrah's, but must somehow trade mailing lists. I did not have a Harrah's card at the time and had maybe visited Vegas twice in the few years prior.
I went to Sandia 3 times in a span of 2 months and dropped $20 into video poker each time and played a few hours of poker. All of a sudden, I received in the mail an offer for 2 free nights at Harrah's Las Vegas. At the same time, my mom received a coupon to give to friends/family for an 2 nights at Caesars. My wife and I booked the 4 nights, we stayed 2 at Harrah's, then moved across the street. As we registered, the desk clerk went "woah, u got a nice room". We had booked 2 months ahead of the trip, but I think we got lucky. We got a huge room 3 floors from the top of tower overlooking the bellagio fountains.
The room was old, but huge and awesome. Our previous trip to Vegas was paid for by my work and we stayed at the Wynn...I prefered the Caesars room because it was larger with a better view, even if the carpet/furniture were outdated.
The rest, as they say, is history. Since then, I go to Vegas about 3 times a year, making sure I get points on my Total Rewards card at least every 6 months. This has resulted in the offers I get.
I don't put in massive hours at the poker table, so I know that these offers are a result of my -EV machine play. When I say about $100 per trip, I mean that I have kept fairly accurate estimates of my video poker play and that is about my average net loss for any given trip (you can sign into your Total Rewards account to see how much you spent on machines in a given year).
I may play a few hundred dollars, but I run pretty good and only lose about $100 per trip (well, maybe it was more prior to my last trip where I came out ahead due to a royal flush).
When I add in the number of Sierra Nevada's I drink that I didn't have to pay $5 a bottle for, I probably come out even. Then, I get rooms for next to nothing...it probably ends up being only a few dollars lost overall and may even be +EV.
I think I got lucky, getting into Total Rewards at a moment when the economy was really bad and Vegas casinos were making really good offers to come out to Vegas. Then I just continued riding that train and the offers continued.
As I said before, you don't have to be a huge degen to get some fairly decent offers. But, I'm not getting insane offers, they won't even assign me a host, I've asked and was pretty much told I need to be betting larger...its not just about building up points. Of course, the whole comp game is in the house's favor, so I don't have any illusions that I'll not be a loser in the long run, but so far its been a pretty good deal.
