Being able to stay with a friend probably changed your odds of success from 30-1 to 6-1. I'd say its worth doing though, if nothing else just to satisfy your curiosity. It seems the most critical people in this thread are actually envious of OP. The guy is 23 years old with no responsibility back home. How many of us at that age would love the opportunity of such an adventure? Like the prior post mentioned, OP can think of this as a vacation.
