Depends what you're looking for. Both are just ok. But if you want to be on the far end of strip and close to the main part of the strip then chooses SLS. If you want to be downtown (Freemont Street) stay at The D.
Thanks, I've been to Vegas probably over 30 times and have always stayed on the strip. Looking to try out Downtown this time and am seriously considering The D and possibly the Golden Nugget.
I like the Nugget, it's got the most "Old Vegas" charm and tackiness but after the renovation it's definitely nice enough. Pretty good little poker room too.
Didn't stay overnight at the SLS, but I stopped in this weekend. The parking garage elevator was out of order. It bugged me more than it should have. Also, the security guys wear plaid jackets like Dickey Barrett of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
SLS on the weeekends has way more and way hotter chicks. Also more expensive and not that near anything. D is near a ton of stuff and cheaper, but in and of itself not all that awesome.
I always stay at the D now if feeling like staying downtown. Definently best choice for fremont IMO. Also if you go during a slow time, during the week, etc, it's pretty easy to get upgraded to the D suite for free or for a really small fee. Room is pretty badass.
... there are only two remaining Sigma Derby machines in Las Vegas. One on the Strip can be found at the MGM Grand Las Vegas as of March 24, 2014. The other is at the D Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas and was host to the Big Empire 2012 Sigma Derby Handicapper's Challenge, which did not produce a winner as the contestants became too inebriated to continue.
To be fair, I haven't been there in a few years. Last time I was there, there was stuff that still hadn't been changed from when it was Caesars, so I haven't wanted to go back.
One of the best times I have ever had in Vegas was at the Sigma Derby machine at the Excalibur. It was probably 15 years ago and we ended up with about 50 people side-betting and getting hammered. Such a shame that there are only two left.
Sigma Derby is a blast. My best memory of it was about 25 years ago at Bally's. There were 3 or 4 of us playing when all of a sudden Redd Foxx who was playing Ballys at the time came and sat down after his show and started playing. He was constantly cracking jokes and admonishing anyone who didn't play the longshots. We all (including Redd) drank heavily and had a really fun time.
