Update Part 2: Where I ponder my future career(s)
I have worked for the same tax software full time for 9 years and a year prior to that as as seasonal employee, but that may be coming to an end soon, not by my own choice. I am on a sort of probation where they monitor my performance monthly and don't get any quarterly bonuses (15 % of my pay) so that part of my life is not so swell. For the past few years I have been primarily a chat support agent and starting approximately last fall my scores have been below goal. I will say that chat support is hard imo and pleasing people solely via chat support is rough. Also there were some issues with the software and some procedures that were out of my control.
After some soul searching I have come to realize I am not happy in my current position there anyways. Things have changed in the company over the years anyways. I have been Work from Home (WFH) for about 7 years now. When I started they basically said most any position can be work from home and people could get hired for advanced positions and still be WFH. Last fall they announced a dramatic change (but I had noticed things before anyways) where those who are WFH within 50 miles lost their abilty to WFH and announced that they are going to make sure those WFH meet performance standards so I guess I am example #1 of that. I have never had a problem with survey scores in the past.
I used to be able to get time off. Being there more than 5 years gets you a month of vacation. Their staffing/scheduling has been pretty terrible the last few years. We can only plan time off 3 months ahead of time and there are only 2 slots per day to request time off. I was able to get 2 days off may-aug and have a month sitting in the bank. I used to be able to take weeks off and went to the WSOP for weeks. There used to be a plethora of positions to advance to, and those have since been outsourced/eliminated and those that remain are not for those WFH and are in fierce competition.
I plan to go one of a few routes:
I am an
Enrolled Agent and can probably get a job in the tax industry. I have a small tax business and I will aggressively market that if need be.
I originally got this job based on my computer knowledge. I dealt with software installations, connection issues, printing issues, and other technical stuff (before that role was outsourced) so I feel like I could be useful in IT type positions. I never bothered to get any certs (A+, etc) as the company did not care about them.
I also have been self-studying web development online using sites such as FreeCodeCamp. There is a lot to learn and maybe in a year I could be employable, depending on how I progress. I am scheduling tech meetup/networking events. A good friend of mine is in the industry and I have been picking his brain as well.
My wife is now working in the Law Enforcement arena and there seems to be lots of room to advance in that department. She will probably soon be the bread winner anyways. I will probably apply for positions there as there seems to always be openings somewhere.
