Just tell people that you work with computers, and the conversation stops. Nobody wants to hear about programming, coding, software engineering, or IT work.

Why would you want to end the conversation?

If you don't want to say whatever you really do, pick a field that you're interested in and say you're applying to grad school or an independent consultant in that field.

And then ask what they do in return, instead of putting your headphones and sunglasses back on.

I like the way you are thinking John. Gotta balance your answer ranges.

+1 trust me this works great. I actually do work in IT and no one ever has a follow up question or comment.

The above.

I was always self-employed and I think I had a very interesting career which morphed into a second career, then I semi-retired. Most people seem to think what I did was interesting, they ask questions, I chat them up, and they give me their money. Works a lot better than sunglasses and earphones. I have people tell me that they look for me when they come to Las Vegas so they can sit and talk. I think that's fantastic.

I definitely don't get not talking to people at the table. It's so ****ing boring.

If you open your mouth your opponents will be able to see your soul and know exactly what hand you have every hand.

Same goes for taking off your sunglasses, it's like a gateway straight to your brain.

Also your soul may leak out of your ears if you remove your headphones.

I don't have any problem with sunglasses, earphones etc. but I definitely prefer a more friendly talkative table and past experience does show that they generally have better action and are more profitable.

I prefer a table that is light and easy going as opposed to nutted-down and super serious. However, I also don't want someone chatting my ear off or talking so much that the game slows to a crawl. I really don't need to know a complete stranger's life history/life philosophy and I think that applies to me as well.

I know you're joking, but drawing out how people think about non-poker situations sometimes allows me to extrapolate how they think about poker situations. For example, bringing up analytics in a sports discussion sometimes lets me get a sense of how well they think in terms of ranges and EV and how results-oriented they are.

I may have misread intent, but I'm fairly sure the conversation isn't about shutting down all conversations, it is about creative ways to avoid conversations you don't want to have and dodge questions you don't want to answer. And hopefully after that, move on to a topic you are comfortable discussing, like How Great Are The Spurs This Year? GENOBLI WHUTT?? etc

Exactly. Let's talk sports or TV shows or make fun of Trump, just don't pitch me stupid business ideas.
