Re: Off Strip Dining / Hidden Gems

I am an idiot that does not know good sushi.. I am sorry for my posts and please dis regard them. JayLV is the only poster in this thread that understands good food and you all should only listen to JayLV's opinion.

I bow to your far superior knowledge of sushi restaurants in Vegas. You are my hero!

My wife took me here last year for my birthday. The food was very good. I highly recommend the steak. The outside looks like it wouldn't be nice, however the inside was very nice decor. They kept a lot of their original design, including the room which the Rat Pack used to escape the police. The service was good and prices were as expected in Vegas for a nice steak house.

I visited the Yama sushi website and my initial impression is that any sushi restaurant that only lists rolls on their menu worries me.

Now you're starting to understand. I wouldn't say I'm the only poster in this thread that knows good food. You, despite your 20 years of experience, do not.

Re: Off Strip Dining / Hidden Gems

I'm going to hit up Lotus of Siam next time i'm in Vegas(next month). Love Thai food, so i'm looking forward to it. I'm staying at the Trop. So, could I Deuce it to Sahara, and walk the rest of the way? Looks to be a little less than a mile off the strip. Has anyone done this? Oh, and Im not worried about walking into some bums and/or drug dealers. I just don't want to pay more for the cab than I did for the meal.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Komex Fusion Express on Decatur yet. Easily the best hole in the wall joint in Vegas. Check Yelp reviews for confirmation.

made me lolligag. i use yelp every now and again but it's by no means a solid gauge of "hole in the wall" restaurants.

I can't wait for your 7th post

Re: Off Strip Dining / Hidden Gems

The problem with taking someone elses sushi recommendation is that there's a wide range of what people consider to be good sushi.

I think when a lot of people start eating sushi, they stick to rolls and things like that. These novice sushi eaters will gauge a restaurant by how the rolls taste, presentation, etc.

As people get more advanced they'll stick to mostly nigiri and the restaurant gets gauged more on the quality of the fish, variety, etc.

Further along they'll stick with mostly sashimi or other items on the menu, and again, quality of fish, selection and presentation are big factors.

If you take a recommendation from someone on sushi, you better make damn sure the person recommending it has the same idea of what good sushi is as you do. Nobody is right or wrong in the argument, but tastes differ.

Re: Off Strip Dining / Hidden Gems

Although I really like Sushi, there always seems to be a lack of generic Japanese options. Are there some good places to eat Japanese cuisine that go beyond Sushi, in or around the strip?

Yelp has never led me astray, 240+ reviewers can't be wrong. Go try it for yourself, then come state your opinion, or don't...and I am 26 and live in Vegas. Nice troll post though.

For this i would recommend yagyu japanese BBQ on spring mtn. They have pretty solid beef bowls for $6. The miso mackerel is great. And they have 29 degree sapporo!

You can also get the plate of meats and cook it at your table similar to a korean BBQ place though I've never actually had that there. They do have stuff like beef tongue and gizards for you adventurous types.

When you are finished eating here be sure to pop in the Tea station next door and get some amazing boba milk tea.

yelp has led me astray, which was my point.

looking at komex's website, i doubt i'll drive the 30 minutes to get "korean, chinese, mexican, american, and a bit of soul too."

not that their website has anything to do with their food, but it didn't help.

komex

clicking on "pictures" and it gives you 5 thumbnails you can't enlarge. Also, featured item of the week (for june 18th apparently) is "no featured item". Sounds delicious!

If you want pictures, go to yelp, there are hundreds of them. I'm not sure what part of Vegas you're in that it would take you 30 minutes to get there, but for most people the drive isn't nearly that far. I live in Summerlin and it's 5 minutes from my house. They don't have a special this week because they just remodeled the inside to add more seating and opened mid-week after being closed for two weeks.

Are you expecting a Joel Robuchon dining experience from a mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall restaurant where nothing costs more than $9? Maybe I side-stepped my way from the "off strip/hidden gems" thread into the fine dining thread somehow and didn't realize it...
