Need a Job!

Hey ya'll currently a St. George Utah resident looking for work in Vegas. I have a degree in Professional and Technical writing, I've worked in customer service and the food industry.

I have a large passion for poker and have played/delt cards for a long time. I know how to deal all games, stud - omaha - holdem - razz - 2-7 draw. I am looking to find a place in Vegas and just some work to get myself going.

Life has gotten me down recently and its been hard to pick myself back up, poker has been one thing that has always been an enjoyable and fun place for me to be. I am trying to look at moving forward and merging my passions with a possible career.

If anyone knows anything about a job opportunity I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks!

Kley

When you do go for job interview or network to get job leads, don't mention your personal life struggles as it just raises red flags on you not showing up for work because of personal issues.

Getting a job in Vegas is pretty hard from out of towners is what I heard. You're close-ish so it might be easier. If you work in the food or customer service industry, you will need to get a bunch of cards/licenses sort of things to be allowed to work in that area.

Try Craigslist for jobs that pay under $20/hr. Lots of restaurants and such post there.

You missed the dealing jobs boom as WSOP is winding down so finding a dealing job now will be next to impossible with too many dealers in town and not enough open positions.

Good luck bro!

Re: Need a Job!

I'd start with the usual job search techniques with a location of Las Vegas. I'll note that the unemployment rate in LV is still higher than the national average or even the Nevada average.

Pro tip. When writing an employer, you don't want to make a typographical error like you did in your OP. Lots of employers just simply throw out any applications with a spelling mistake, especially ones made when the applicant had plenty of time to check their work. People who are sloppy with their writing are likely to be sloppy at the table, too.

This is like having a degree in English. You are not separating yourself from the crowd.

But what's done is done. Good luck in Vegas. And see you at the tables.

Technical writing is a specific skill, not just "I write about technical stuff". They write procedures, documentation, etc. It's not easy to do.

The guy has a Technical Writing degree and he works in the food industry. What does that tell you?

BTW, I know what technical writing is. I used to do it in my old job. And I did not have a degree in it. Which should say something about the value of a Technical Writing degree.

Re: Need a Job!

Are you looking to move first? I'd imagine that employers would want to see that you have an LV address when looking at applications/resumes.

If you're looking for immediate work and haven't done the following, go to LV's Craigslist, Indeed, and other job search websites, and in their search box, type in words such as ASAP, As soon as possible, Immediate, Immediately, Now, and it'll pull up job listings of employers looking to hire fast. If you're looking to work at a casino, do a search on those job search websites with the name of each casino. Also, go to every casino's own website. They typically have a Careers or Employment link that lists their available openings. Good Luck!

Disagree. Your resume and cover letter should actually very much differentiate you from the crowd. It's rare to find someone these days who can actually write anything without any grammatical or spelling errors. Having the ability to read and write properly in our dyslexic society today opens up many doors.

Shouldn't be a problem to find a job in many industries that aren't food service or labor jobs. Just use your education/skills to write a solid cover letter and you should get call backs.

Re: Need a Job!

There's plenty of jobs, if you absolutely need to work, but this is a service industry/retail town so the majority of jobs posted around all outlets are going to be in the service industry, casino industry, sales, or retail sales. Specialized firms are few and far in between here because the basic economy of the town is all resort/entertainment based.

I've been here for 3 1/2 years and have worked in sales and advertising (SEM, SEO, media buying). Right now I'm just doing contract work and poker full time.

Hi,

This is a short-term thing but I can offer you $50 for a day of (fun) work. It basically just involves you leaving drop-cards (business cards that look like dollar bills) in and around casinos, preferably in and near the poker rooms. I will pay you $50 cash up front and give you a bunch of cards, and trust you to go to different poker rooms on the strip and leave them on the floor and other creative places. This offer is open to anyone; I'll limit it to 2 people but PM me if you are interested.

Possibly, depending on how you define litter.

Really, what is the point of beating up the OP more after he said he was feeling down? What is wrong with you?

KeyGuy is a guy. Save your white knighting for a good looking girl. Also, anyone posting in this forum can stand a little constructive criticism.

If you read the whole thread, you would notice that my criticism was mainly directed to pig4bill, who challenged the validity of my statements. Context is important.

What is wrong with you?

Based on the way the casinos and metro define litter, you may have to pay someone more than $50 to cover the fines they will receive.
