you jumped like three steps in assuming I gain pleasure from inflicting pain on others... I guess this is just what you do for fun... *remembers why I hate the internet*

My making that leap has nothing to do with my being a Christian and everything to do with being a sinner.

subd as I'm also in the beginning stages of looking to move. My budget is much cheaper at $1000 or less per month. Looking at HotPads briefly made it look as though it won't be too hard finding a place. I would prefer a small house with a fenced in yard as I have a 4 year old german shepherd over an apartment.

What are the sketchy areas to avoid when looking? I've been to vegas several times but only to the strip. I've never had a car to explore the surrounding areas.

Thanks in advance.

When I was moving here someone told me (and I've found this to be true) is that there are sketchy people in ALL parts of Las Vegas - DO NOT get/pay anything until you see it for yourself, in person. Look at the place, look at your neighbors, take your time.

Having said that, I think that (generally speaking) you have a better chance of success sticking to west vegas rather than east Vegas. Stay away from anything near Downtown and definitely stay away from anything near Boulder Highway. I realize that this is meta level advice, but it can at least help you narrow down some areas.

A house for $1k is going to be tough not impossible. I live in a big dog friendly apartment complex and there are plenty of them for less than $1k/mo.

Since the west side is where I'm going to be looking, are they pretty dog friendly out there?

When I moved to Colorado it was difficult finding a place because they claimed german shepherds were an "aggressive breed" along with another dozen breeds, but mine is the worst guard dog ever & the opposite of that stereotype. I realize it's because the insurance companies tell them the breeds but it makes it difficult on a happy dog owner.

Are the apartment complexes difficult to deal with? Are there specific ones that are known to be good?

The west side is not about looking for apartments, that's more condos and homes for rent. So the dog issue will depend on the individual landlords more than anything else

Great, thanks for the direction! I've read the reviews on a management company called Olen & they seem to be awful throughout google reviews. Apartmentratings.com seems to be a place of ranting so it's hard to get a feel for what to steer clear of & what to consider. I guess I'll have to narrow down several choices then take a trip out there & rent a car to go around myself & take a look. I'm going to be moving from Georgia so it's gonna be one long haul.

I'm also thinking about moving to Vegas; I have a hot lead on an engineering position in North Las Vegas. The job should pay pretty well and I can easily afford at least $3K/month in rent (single, no family), but of course I'd prefer to save my money to spend on, ahem, *other* local things.

I'm doing the opposite of what most here do in that I currently play poker full time, but I'll be moving to Vegas for a day job. However I'll still want to play on the weekends, etc. I actually thought downtown would be a good compromise between commute time and access to the Strip. Also, even though I'm aarp old, I still like to go out drinking and partying. Despite the above advice, would a (seemingly) upscale property like the following be a good downtown option? Or should the entire area be avoided?

I've had clients at both juhl and Ogden (they are sister properties, same management co, etc). IMO they are frat houses for (rich) grown ups. Not my scene at all. Was happy to leave those clients. If that's your thing, that's the scene there.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I wouldn't want that type of environment in the complex in which I actually live.

With that kind of budget you could get a gorgeous house in Summerlin or something like that. You don't want to live near the strip or downtown - it's highly impractical. Where are you going to get groceries? Doctors? Church? Etc. just doesn't make sense

You can definitely get a nice house for about 1,500/mo. If it's your thing you might be able to get something on the strip for that and definitely downtown but never tried that myself.

I've seen the top of the mark for Ogden. Three bedrooms, wood floors, strip view. 3k ain't going to get you there. Downtown now is like LA prices. Insanity.

Guess the $1,500/mo specials are gone hadn't been paying attention. Can't imagine spending that much for staying downtown but maybe i'm missing something starting to wonder. Anyhow, if the OP is working in NLV he'd probably be best off to live there and go to strip downtown or locals casino, ie Red Rock or Santa Fe for poker vs dealing with the strip daily. Strip isn't really that far from anywhere it's parking and getting to the casino that get you.

That is SO true. I like the way you put that.

It's possible that Ogden has 1500 but it's probably a studio, low floor with a view of the El Cortez

What do you guys think are the best apartment complexes on the west side? The two I've found so far that I like are Allanza at the Lakes & San Croix. Only problem with the Ovation properties is their freakin fees. Plus the fact that I can't show proof of my monthly income being 3x the rent (I can show 2.5x but not 3) I would have to pay 3 months of rent up front. They say all jobs that are tipped based require the same thing.

They sent me a quote yesterday.

1 BR 796 sq.ft - $871 (seems really high for vegas)
$50 app fee (standard)
$450 pet fee (pretty high compared to anywhere else I've rented)
$500 security deposit (all complexes do everything they can to keep this when you move so I basically just factor it in as a fee)
$300 redecorating fee (I've lived in apartments all over TN & CO yet I've never once heard of this)
$35 gate remote deposit

I'm pretty sure Allanza is around $750 a month for the same square footage, but I haven't heard back from them yet. I'll be going by a few places this weekend when I fly out there. Where else should I look?

found this thread and i don´t want to hijack it but im also thinking about moving to LV from Switzerland. Not sure for how long though, maybe 6 months, 12 or maybe even longer. I rly want to experience the whole Strip thingy and play a lot of poker, so i was thinking about renting a room in a hotel that offers these 2. Any advice or experience on that?

shouldn´t be super expensive as in 5k+/month but between like 2k and 4k would be good. thx a bunch!

A Vdara deluxe suite would be a good option: http://www.vdara.com/suites/long-term-rentals.aspx

This one list the Vdara and several others. The Palm is in the mid 2k range. I have not stayed at either personally. I am sure someone in here has.

Does anyone have any feedback on condos near SouthPoint or feedback on that area in general?

I like what I've seen so far for the midrise condo layouts of Manhattan and Park Avenue (I think it's called) and also a little intrigued at the Boca Raton electric included options.

Looking specifically for 6-12 month rental for a couple and a cat, (March/April starting), thanks for any input anyone can share!
