Mountain biking in Vegas

Anyone do any mountain biking in and around Vegas? I'm still a biking newb but have checked out some of the spots.

Cottonwood trails in Blue Diamond. This is probably my favorite place. Miles and miles of smooth track

Bootleg Canyon near Hoover Dam. Supposedly one of the premier mountain bike parks in the country. The advanced trails look scary as ****. The newb ones I rode were pretty cool.

There's also a place out past Summerlin near Bear's Best. Not up to the standards of the other two but pretty cool if you live around there

Anyone else into this activity? Know of any good spots to ride?

Not lazy, just prefer my bikes to have 450cc motors.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

I'm coming to Vegas in October and would love to do some mountain biking while there. Do you know of any organised/guided trips or do you think most people sort things out themselves?

If you want an English riding buddy one day then it would be cool to meet up, I don't think the guys I'm going with are too into exercise but seeing those pics makes me drool a little.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

I've never done a guided tour so I can't say which ones are the best, but McGhie's has a good rep and they have an outpost at Cottonwood (first pic in the OP) so I bet there'd be good. http://mcghies.com/

I PM'ed you also.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

Same reason people use ski lifts in winter.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

yeah you prob just don't get the topography of it. I had heard they have lifts didn't see where they were (prob in a different place I missed) but think like 2000 feet of elevation change straight up. not something you can just ride your bike up.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

In winter, the areas around the Colorado River (Lake Mead NRA) must be superb. Boulder City would be the hub for that. Spring and Fall go into the Sheep Mtns. north of town. Summer, make the trip up to Mt Charleston, or GTFO and go to mountains in Utah, Colorado, or California.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

Nice vid, that's way above my level. Speed wise I'd be fine but not with all that rocky crap to deal with too, I'd prob take 2-3 times as long to get down that!

Looks like mondo buckthorns.
Hopefully, I'm wrong as regards Vegas.
Unreal but true: San Jose, CA crawling w/ buckthorns,
as are parts of SoCal and AZ.

Re: Mountain biking in Vegas

I was trying to get the old Augie thread on locked up bike but that thread was closed ....

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but:

My bike experience took a hit this week.

Bike (Mountain 26") was stolen at The Orleans probably in the late afternoon when there is movement near the bike storage area near the back entrance near the poker room.

Ten ply steel cable lock cut and left. Cut looked like as if it was done by cutters in one slice. In otherwords very professionally.

The Orleans security were on the scene before me. A security report with them and the next day with LVMetro at the substation on Las Vegas Blvd.

What I have learnt from the experience:

Continue to buy bike as cheap as possible that will get eventually stolen if I'm going to ride to the Casinos around the strip. This bike like 2 others that have died here in LV were bought at Flea Market at Pecos. I'll be there Sunday....

Cable locks are not good enough. U-lock is a must and maybe at places like The Orleans 2 are needed.

Change the place of where I lock the bike regularly even when you're trying to play for that all elusive Bad Beat Jackpot. (BTW it was hit yesterday for $85,000+)

Continual learning experience here in LV: ~-$80 since I lost some accessories on the bike)
