Esteemed friends,

Like most of you, I have been following Trooper97 and PokreKraut's ************ bet. I am hoping we can be like some of the other communities on this site and create a weight loss challenge thread. I know my fat ass needs to drop some pounds and I'm sure a few of you are feeling the same way. I hope this can be a place within the community that people can find encouragement, camaraderie and fellowship with those trying to "better" themselves.

Feel free to post updates, tips and goals.

I hope you all will join in if you feel like it. I'd personally like to invite Kraut and Trooper97 to participate as well as encourage our leader Gobbo to join the journey!

Glad we have another participant. Welcome to the thread!

1/30/17 - 273.4

So my strategy is coming together for this. I have been making a point to drink more water. I cut out the booze this weekend. Next weekend going to cut out the bread. I'll pick something else every week to cut out within reason.

I'm not sure how I'm going to reward myself if I get to my target weight, 190 lbs. I usually just gamble or whore around when I'm in Vegas so I'll probably try to do something experience related. Open to some suggestions.

Thanks again for joining, hope others do as well - especially Gobbo or some of the vloggers!

1/30/2017 220 and not nearly tall enough to make that work.

If I cook more, it'll come off.

Welcome to the thread new folks!

274.5, not sure why I'm on the uptick because definitely being mindful of what I'm eating. Had sushi, salad and chilli yesterday, maybe they were higher in sodium than I thought. I hope it's just water/increased weight lifting, but I cannot imagine I'm getting "swole" that quickly.

On the bright side, I may be going to Vegas this weekend on a last minute jaunt. Will definitely put my booze abstinence to the test.

Checking your weight more than once a week doesn't really help, there's just too much fluctuation.

As every year I gained a couple pounds over the holidays. Right now I am somewhere between 137-140, want to be back around 130 by early April. Goal is to consistently swim and cycle at least twice a week while maintaining my current running volume of at least 35 miles/week.

Burning ~7k activity calories per week allows for me to eat as much candy, chips and ice cream as I want.

You're doing it wrong madlex.

Thanks for the advice! I have tried to do weigh-ins around the same time to combat the fluctuations but will take your advice and not monitor so closely the next 7-10 days. Appreciate the help pal.

The only issue I have is that I am hitting the gym doing weights as well as cardio. So I won't be dropping pounds so much as inches off my waist (my main goal).

268.9(!) Had a really good week working out and eating. I'm still staying off the booze and bread. I tried to cut out fried food but because of the entertaining portion of my job, I eat out a lot and appetizers always seem to be fried! I am going to do better this week and hopefully cut out red meat next week.

Did not make it to Vegas for Super Bowl weekend due to a last minute business-related "emergency." One thing I noticed was I smoked a lot more this past week than normal. I smoke 0-10 cigarettes per day, during normal weeks I buy 2-3 packs. Last week I was going through a pack in the evening and a pack at work due to stress and working with a team from Korea who all seemed to smoke and talk a lot of business on smoke breaks. I noticed that I had a lot more energy and less appetite due to my increased smoking.

I guess my question is, do other methods of nicotine ingestion also work to reduce appetite and increase energy or is it the smoking? I've thought of doing the patch or nicotine gum but don't want to make the habit even worse without the weight loss benefits.

OK, I'm in too. Can use the motivation. I started the year off at 225. Goal is (gulp) 175.

Going low carb ( 20 grams/day) and way less booze, beer. Will add some walking maybe other exercise soon.

Am at 215 today. Long way to go

Good job!

If there's really only fried appetizers available, you might want to skip that and just have a main course. If that's not enough food for you, bring something healthy from home that you eat 30 minutes before going to eat out. There are a gazillion salads that you can prepare on Sunday, put to the fridge and then eat over the course of the week. I like quinoa, brown rice, couscous or lentil based salads and if you want to go low carb you can always use substitutes like cauliflower couscous for regular couscous.

Do those restaurants serve healthy entrees?

Thanks for congrats MadLex and welcome new folks!

I'm not going to lie, I didn't think I'd lose as much without weighing every day because I like the positive reinforcement of seeing the scale tick down. However, I think I'm going to keep my weigh-ins to just once per week. Before, there were days I'd lose 3 pounds and then wouldn't lose any the next day. I know that I didn't lose 3 lbs of fat on the day I lost the 3 lbs so if anything it is not worth the fake assurance that I am on track which might lead to me justifying a trip to Chipolte for lunch or something which I didn't really need.

Welcome to the thread folks. GMF, no shame in trying buddy!

Jelloman-I'm not in Vegas either, just love love love going and really like the LVL community on here. This is definitely open to everyone, glad you're here send your friends!

On that note, I'll be in Vegas this weekend to make up for missing out on Super Bowl weekend. Thinking about maybe doing a healthy living TR but it is going to be a short trip and I'm terrible about taking pictures so we'll see. Would love to meet up with people but this isn't the trip to do it because it will be so short and I plan on meeting up with a lady for a bit while I'm out there. Broads need servicing I guess.

If you're like me and don't want to stop with the sweet stuff, you should start baking your own cakes and cookies.

There are tons of recipes on the internet for sweets that are at least a little less unhealthy by substituting white flour with whole wheat flour, oat flour or almond flour; white sugar with honey, brown sugar or fruit juice; cheap oil with coconut oil or butter.

Same thing as with cooking, preparing your own stuff lets you cut out the bad stuff in convenience/carry out food and gives you a way better understanding of what you eat exactly. I bought a cook book for endurance athletes last summer that really helped me with that.

I'm around 135lb right now, on pace to get back to 130 before the end of March. In a perfect world, I lose 1 pound a week from now on to get there a week ahead of schedule. I'd hate to have to cut snacks in the end to get there but even worse would be to have to cut weight into April.

Maxlex, if you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? Did you ever do any combat sports or work as a jockey or in other capacities in the horseracing industry? I always wanted to be a jockey but was too big by the time I was in 6th grade Also felt I got screwed over compared to my cousins in wrestling because I was always a few classes up from them. For weight loss purposes, I am glad I'm a taller guy I think because I feel like I have more room to work with the weight though it was annoying at times when I was younger. Mad props for keeping yourself on track!

That made me laugh hard

At 5"8 I'm prolly too tall and certainly way too heavy to be a jockey. No sports background besides soccer in high school and some long distance running in my mid 20s. Started running again 2 years ago and plan on doing a half-ironman this fall and hopefully also qualify for the Boston Marathon. Especially for the latter, every extra pound really hurts.
