They have been making changes to the Luxor. Monte Carlo closed the room when they were starting to make changes to that place.

I always like the Luxor poker room better than Mandalay Bay and Excalibur. $2 an hour comps which is more than many of the big rooms offer, and they had some of the better promotions on the Strip over the years. Excalibur has that dumb wheel that doesn't pay anything.

Ha yep, the noon Luxor was the first tourney I ever played. Ran up a huge stack then punted it and cashed for peanuts in 4th. Knew I was on my way LOL.

My first experience with a Luxor tournament was not very satisfying. I was at my hotel and saw there was a tourney there starting up at the top of the hour. Strip traffic being what it is and the place being at the far end, I was late by four minutes. Too bad, it's a freezeout, no late entries. Seriously? Who does that? Places that can't stay open I guess.

Another dumb decision. They should have as many tables open as possible to pull in money while they can. It would also bring more people through the casino.

My first stay at poker room action in Vegas were both at the Luxor; around 2010 or so. They had a weird rule where it was something like you could buy in for max of $200, and then if/when your stack dipped below $200 by any amount, you could add on for $100. Tables were friendly and touristy; I remember some employee at a bar in the casino came over hammered around 3am to play and spewed 500-600 quickly.

Yes, I remember that stupid rule. You could either just tip the dealer $1 and then get the extra $100 or wait till you play a blind or lose a few bucks. It was annoying because I never start with $200 in 1/2 and always $300.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that the rule was that you could add a max of $200 to your stack anytime that your stack dropped below $200. Consequently, once you lost $1 (or tipped the dealer $1), the max buyin essentially became $399.

There wasa time when most tournaments were set up that way. And there are still many people who prefer the idea that if you want to play a tournament you be there when its starts.

But the Luxor hasn't had those rules for a long time. In fact its been so long I can't remember when it was..... thoughh i think I recall that back in the late 90's

I think you are right; that sounds correct. I liked to idea of being able to sit with essentially $400. Still a very odd rule; maybe they did it to promote tipping the dealer a $1 off the start so you could add on, which would be in line with the one poster that discussed them teaching the game and 10% tip rules lol

The supervisor at the time said to be less intimidating to beginners/tourists. By not making it seem like its a bigger buy in game and only $200, but with a loophole so the regs could still get more on the table.

There were certainly other rooms in Vegas that had late entries for dailies at the time because I was used to it. I never went back to Luxor again until they had those stupid electronic tables for satelliting into WSOP events.

I don't remember electronic tables there? Are you sure it was Luxor? And not a Harrahs property?

Yes, they were the 1st and only that had them back years ago. It sucked.

Actually, it was Excal I was thinking of with the electronic poker.

I can't tell the difference between Excal and Luxor rooms. They kept changing every year or two. Might have been Excal but I thought it was Luxor for sure.

I have some friends that are dealers at the Luxor (and have been for a very long time). The reason that their tables may be limited on Saturday and Sunday while their giveaway is on-going is because many of their dealers have left, quit, found other work, plan on calling in sick, etc.

Many of them see no point in continuing to deal at a place where they will no longer have employment, and are choosing to spend their energies elsewhere - some specifically to find new positions.

This goes back a long time, but Luxor used to have $50 max buyin NL, and you could buy another $50 if your stack dropped to $49. Most folks played 2/4 limit or $30 tourneys then, but one table of $50 NL was usually going.

Makes sense. I heard they were offered some positions at other MGM rooms but not sure if their tenure and stuff carries over.

Luxor and Excalibur haven't changed much in the last 5 years. Luxor used to be a really weird room but in the last 5-6 years they ran 1-2 NL with a $300 max buy-in. The minimum buy-in was less than $100 but it also seemed to get some really weak players into the room. Sometimes stacks were too small but I also sometimes played in some great games there.

It was definitely Excalibur with the electronic tables. When they got rid of them they had that strip poker tournament on Saturday nights to get business back in the room.

I went there today about 1:30 PM. 6 full tables going and 30+ on the wait list (no I didn't stick around). guess word got out about the bonuses.

I imagin it's nearly impossible to dislodge anyone from their seat.

The sad thing is some rooms give out more every day.
