Live Poker Staking Stables in Vegas? Live Poker Staking Stables in Vegas?

I've posted this here instead of the staking forum since this is more of an general inquiry on how live poker staking stables work in Vegas.

This topic came to my attention because the last couple of months, I've been playing about 30 - 35 hours a week of 1/3 at the Bellagio. Two incidents came up - the first was with a competent player talking to dealer of how most staked players don't make much money, and how he knows someone who runs a stable. The second was last night where the player to my left (9 seat) gave someone who walked up to him a heads up that he was here, and then proceeded to give him $200 to buy in at another table. The player who gave the money was definitely a solid player and a nice guy. He seemed nice enough where I could have asked him on the DL, and I should have. Maybe he was staking the other player or not, I'm really not sure.

I guess I was just curious as to how these stables work. I've read the old article on Chad Powers and his stable in MD and was wondering how things compare to here in Vegas.

Is there an application process? A test to determine one's knowledge level? A referral process? Is coaching included? Are the goals to eventually move horses up to 2/5 and 5/10? How are potential trust issues dealt with in a live setting?

Just questions from a Bellagio grinder who is fascinated with this aspect of the poker subculture. Thanks in advance.

I really have no idea, so I shouldn't really be posting.... However, I think it's pretty safe to assume that it's all about who you know and what poker circles you run in.

Has to be a deep pocketed stable if they stake Gus for poker.

You'll get better answers in the staking forums.

If you've read Chad's threads, then you know how it is going to work in Las Vegas. It won't be much different. There's no standard deal. You could sign papers, get coaching, have different time commitments, etc.

Personally, the best staking agreements I've seen over the years have been for players that need a relatively short term cushion as they move up in stakes. They are crushing their current level, will likely beat the next level, but don't have the bankroll to sustain a downswing in their minds. A stake eliminates the leak of playing with scared money until they are used to it.

What would scare me off is if you were a small winner in the game or have a large off table leak (drugs, partner, high living expense nut). There are lots of stories of people just walking away with their stake because they "needed" the money for something else.

It's all about who you know and are networked with, I've been staked and have staked multiple times and every deal is unique and everyone has their own formula
