Real name Steven Frederick. Lifetime tournament cashes $306,380.

Favorite quote:"Things always change"

I met Backpack Steve in The Orleans. He is infamous in the LVS small stakes poker community for his inability to feel shame. You cannot kill this man, he will keep coming back. I am sure he has experienced broke more times than he can remember.

At a poker table his tactics can be dangerous as he is knowledgeable enough to exploit your tendencies. He uses aggression tactically especially in tournaments.

In March he came second in The Player of the Month Standings at The Orleans. I used my image to make him pay off a dept at the time to one of my friends, who was silly enough to hand Mr. Fredrick's monies. By mid-April Steve was short stacking 1-2 games and begging for staking.

I have a picture of the March leader board, but I am to computer illiterate to upload it into the thread. Here is a link to his Cardplayer profile.

It was definitely the guy i was thinking of that i mentioned in the other thread. No idea where i got the bay 101 thing -- but i was certain that that was his big cash and that it was quite a bit bigger than it was.

As to the gent's skill, i think you are giving him way too much credit. He's decent against fish and terrible against everyone else. And he taps on the glass more than any reg i have ever met.

I was just starting out when i met him, and i remember googling him and being outright appalled that someone that bad had 300K donkament winnings.

all that said, id be very surprised if this thread is long for the world.

Steve's play is highly dependent on his current state of mind. He is obviously highly prone to tilt. You are missing what is so great about him. He is the ultimate degen, he builds rolls just to bust them over and over again. Pure insanity. Don't bash his skill set, because it is the least of his worries.

I've seen the guy in some PH guarantees and couldn't believe how upset someone I've seen around forever can get about some beats in whatever $60 **** it was. It's hilarious.

This guy will forever be broke and begging for stakes. How he keeps getting in action I have no clue. He's forever broke and terrible imo and I always see him in some satellite or tourney. He must have some hypnotic power over action junkies. And he thinks he can beat blackjack lol. I've seen him play, he has no shot.

He's basically homeless, but has high tier players cards for MGM and Harrah's lol.

$60 means a lot when you have $0.

Sounds like a swell guy. He should get into modeling. BTW, what is the legend? Any interesting stories of him building and busting or is this the whole thread?

this whole discussion started in the Shawn Jacob thread..... they were talking about some random semi-homeless reg and no one could think of his name until the OP of this thread came up with it.

Also -- im not sure how accurate the "building and busting" thing is. AFAIK he had a couple big hits, degened it all away on pit games and poker tourneys he couldnt beat, then lived off loans and staking. He never really "rebuilt".

strongly agree with mr. Spyutastic -- this dude is pretty much el worsto. Not only is he terrible, but he's self-righteous about it. If he were a rock band he would be Creed.

I played with this guy for a few hours and when some drunks were critizing his played, he borrowed my phone, searched his own name on google, and walked around the table showing everyone his tournament scores. When the drunks made fun of him for playing low stakes poker, he talked for an hour about how he lost it all playing blackjack and that he has a "system" for the game and that it should have worked.

This guy and Tony Big Charles should be b.f.f's

Apparently this is what many others have said to themselves and done for years.

TBC and Steve would be great to see at a table together. They're such clowns.

I've played with that guy more times than I care to remember. He's actually a halfway decent tournament player, but does not understand ( or at least used to not understand) short stack game.

And, he's a whiner par excellence

Several people have told me Backpack Steve used to play high stakes, so I ask him one day. Sure enough he confirmed the high stakes games and then told me about getting divorced and other issues that sent his life into the downward spiral.

Apparently he's an educated man w/ a masters degree and at one time in his life was a very successful bond trader.

At the poker table he does appear to play a good poker game sometimes. However the combination of poor BR managment and other life tilt issues contribute to him being an overall loser at poker.

He's a nice guy when you chat w/ him, and of course he'll ask for money, and when you say no he doesn't have a care in the world.

One guy I know staked him in a small cash game, after some time Backpack Steve had built a dandy stack of nearly $1k. Then told him "I'm going home", the story goes that Backpack Steve was able to palm enough chips off the table to repay the guy who staked him. Then recomended to Steve that he should rack it up and call it a nice win, that didn't happen. By the next Backpack Steve was needing a stake again for a $1/2 game.

Another time when he asking me for money I ask why he wasn't playing other places, the story he told was that back when he was playing high stakes he took markers from several casino's and then never paid them back. As the story goes apparently the casino's have dropped the charges down so thats why he's not just arrested, but not allowed to play in several of the larger rooms....thats the story anyway.

I can verify that he is an awful player. He may owe more individuals money in the poker world than anyone else.

How is anyone dumb enough to give a stranger a stake in Vegas? Seriously?

I'd take his whole "I've got a masters degree and I'm smarter than everyone" spiel with a grain of salt. I've heard it all as well. He tried to tell me how he was an expert in blackjack and I couldn't tell him anything he didn't know. I watched him play for half a shoe and can tell you he sucks. Somehow he suckered a couple other degens to stake him lol.

I have to say though, the guy is a genius at getting people to put him in action. Who needs a bankroll with that kind of talent? Wish I had that ability.

That pokerbeats site is funny.

Don't really have a story...but I've definitely played w/ that dude a hundred times. Mostly at Venetian and Caesars.
