I've stayed at all of the places you said you didn't pay security deposits and they all required them from me. Often times they don't even mention it directly. They just say we need a CC on file or something

NYNY is an MGM property so they take the same $100 a night that the rest of the Mlife properties do.

It's usually not "$100 a night" for all the nights you're staying. Like if your reservation is 4 nights they don't take $400. They take $100 for the first night. If you don't charge anything to the room, it stays $100. If you charge $50 to the room, they pull another $50 so they always have a $100 safety deposit.

So just don't charge anything to your room, leave $110 in your account, and you'll probably be good.

Now rental cars are a different story. Once, them bastids demanded $500 deposit and I didn't have a card with me that could handle it. Walking and taxis on that trip.

Also, for an average amateur player who works full time for a living - 4k to gamble and be farcey with is quite a lot. We are not all in a position to farce away tons of cash.

I guess you need to be aware of other people and cultures perspectives on things instead of assuming everyone other than your owns are cringeworthy.

There's one easy and efficient solution to your problem and you got it in this thread: get a credit card.

Unless this trip is supposed to be the last time you want to leave home, you will need one anyway eventually. More and more things are credit card only, including buying things on the plane to get to Vegas, at least on some carriers.

I know some countries are not like that, but in the US you really need a CC. Yes, 4k is a lot, the average gambling budget for a Vegas trip is like 600something.
Just look into a CC, many of them are free with a bank account or very low in costs.
Having said that 100-300/nt seems excessive. Shangri-La Sydney recently held me 200 for a 5 night stay and I'm pretty sure this hotel is several steps above MGM grand. It's prolly more like pig4bill said.

You are incorrect. You can use a debit card to reserve a room at HIE and it will not be charged unless you go past the cancel period, usually 6pm the day off arrival. Strip hotels charge your card up front as soon as you reserve.

That's not even what we're talking about. We're talking about the deposit you have to leave for incidentals when you check in. I've never had any strip or non strip hotel charge me anything until I actually arrive.

You're right, but it cuts both ways. You're considering coming to the US, so you need to be aware of American culture and American perspectives.

American hotels generally put a hold on your credit card. American visitors generally use credit cards. You don't have to like it or even agree with it but that's the way things are done. If you don't want to conform to American customs, be prepared to be hassled.

If you want people to treat you special because you are planning on spending OMG4K, I suggest you target a different destination. Maybe Sharm El Shiekh in Egypt or the Greek islands. You're going to find it easier to spend cash and you're going to stand out more, than in vegas.

OP, consider staying somewhere much cheaper than MGM. Places like Ballys, Flamingo, Monte Carlo have really good location and are probably only like half the price of MGM.

I understand what you're saying but first 2 trips I didn't even own a credit card, booked and paid in advance with a debit card, nothing was charged to this on either occasion.

I do think some properties waive it but I wouldn't rely on this happening from experience, as someone else said if going to the US I would def make provisions for a security deposit and if they waive it its a bonus.

You can also leave cash but I believe they want slightly more than the rate of a credit card hold.

Be careful they are way more strict now. They require a credit card that can swipe at any strip properties.

Most UK hotels do this as well in my experience. As others have said it is not a charge it is a hold on the card so that if you charge something to the room they have a way of it being paid.

I travel a bit in the UK for business and am always asked to do this and pretty much always charge something to the room from the bar as I do when I am on holiday as well.

It is standard practice for most hotels above a Premier Inn or Travelodge.

The idea of getting a CC before you go is a good one, set the limit low if you are worried about going mad on it and just use it for this. If you want to be extreme cut it up after the trip so you cannot use it!

The truth is, if you're young you should get a credit card anyway. Use it a little bit every once in awhile. Charge 50 or a hundred on it and then pay it off when the bill comes so that you don't pay interest. It will help your credit rating a lot. You may think you'll never borrow money, but you still need a credit rating. Many employers check your credit before hiring. Sometimes insurance rates can be affected by your credit rating. And if you ever rent a dwelling, your credit will probably be checked.

It appears from previous posts that OP lives in the UK, and if so this information is of little use to him.

The way credit is being tracked in the UK (by 'credit reference agencies') differ immensely from how things work in the US. Employers and landlords, for instance, have no access to detailed information about credit use - only to defaults and court judgments.

It's the same way in continental Europe but every time I filled out an application for an apartment, they asked for a detailed credit score. So I had to go to a place that is licensed to give you that information, wait in line and then pay to obtain a piece of paper..
