As soon as we came in the guy working the counter gave a friendly greeting, asked if it was our first time there, and when we said yes offered a sample of a couple of the kinds of protein.
When SoCal says it is "basically Hawaiian Chipotle," he means it is exactly the Chipotle set up with some Hawaiian flavors/seasonings. I mean, to the point I would be worried about Chipotle suing for some kind of blatant copying of their model. You choose a burrito, bowl or tacos (soft flour or crunchy corn), and if you get soft tortillas they warm them up in the little press. You choose Steak, Chicken, Shredded Pork or Fried Fish, then add lettuce, sour cream, guac (extra), grilled veggies (extra), 3 kinds of salsas, jalapenos, cilantro, and/or cheese. The proteins are prepared with Hawaiian techniques or flavorings - the pork is Kahlua Pig, and the chicken is Huli Huli (spl?) Chicken. The salsas are also tropical - there's a Mango based one that is mild, another with corn & jalapeno I think, and the hot one is tomato and maui onion based. Also, the rice is either regular or with seaweed in it - I got the seaweed rice and you could absolutely taste it in there.
Wife got pork and chicken tacos, I got a steak & chicken burrito. I thought both proteins were tasty, more seasoned than the Chipotle version. Salsas were good too - I added all three to the burrito which blended the flavors a little too much. Wife just got the mango one and grilled veggies on the tacos, was very good, particularly the pork.
I did also get chips & guac on the side - kind of bland guac I thought, needed more salt or lime juice or something. Wouldn't get again, particularly when it's 4.50 to add it (more than 50% the cost of a burrito).
They also had some homemade hot sauces out where the Tabasco would be at Chipotle. Four levels of heat, I tried the one pepper which was I think Pinneable and Jalepeno - was way too sweet, no heat. The other I had was the three pepper which was great - guava and habanero. Was very sweet and tasty, but very spicy as well. I would probably have bought a bottle if they sold them, really liked it. They had a four pepper which was coconut based, but can't imagine liking anything spicier than the guava/hab one i tried, was at my threshold.
Lastly, they sell a desert they call Coconut Bark - basically a Chocolate/Toffee/Maybe Caramel layered brittle with some coconut in it. Really, really excellent as long as you're ok with very, very sweet. I don't like cocount, but you really don't taste that flavor much if at all, just a little bit of the texture.
In all, really enjoyed it. Unfortunately it's a solid 20 minute drive from my place so I doubt I'll frequent too often. I would have been very worried about their survival given how dead it was at dinner time, but maybe they do good lunch business. They had a table placard up that said they have two other locations coming soon (I think one in the north and one in Green Valley), so they can't be doing too bad. Hope they do well, really seemed like the folks working there were nice and cared about giving good service.
