Pretty bad experience at Hash House in IP today. Took about 45 minutes after ordering to get the portobello mushroom sandwich I ordered (which was packed with way too many peppers), and then took another 15 minutes for my wife to get her meatloaf sandwich. The meatloaf was actually tasty, and portions are good, but the service really ruined it.

So far we did have a good meal at BLT Burger and another good one at Noodles.

UncleCliffy is your resident Las Vegas strip matzoh ball expert. The closing of the stage deli at Caesars a few years back was a matzoh ball tragedy. Their soup was very simple: a light chicken broth, enormous yet fluffy matzoh ball, and a few assorted carrots and pieces of chicken and that was about it. Their sandwiches were just ok, but the soup there was amazing. (note: I believe there is still a mini-Stage Deli at MGM near the poker room, but the soup is not on par with the one that used to exist at Caesars)

I've tried a few others since then, particularly the Carnegie Deli at Mirage (stick to the sandwiches). The deli at the Wynn was highly recommended, but I thought it to be nothing special, and the matzoh ball was very grainy.

So, without a doubt, the best matzoh ball soup currently in Las Vegas (in the Strip area) is at Canter's Deli at TI. It's a large bowl, chock full of goodness (noodles, rich broth, chunks of chicken, carrot, and celery), and it's already fairly salty. The ball itself is large (about the size of a baseball), and it's usually fairly light and fluffy. I've been to Canter's at least 15-20 times. I like ordering the bowl of soup + 1/2 sandwich for $10.50. I'm a huge eater and normally this would be enough, but the soup is large and filling, and of course the sandwich is big (I almost want to order 2 more pieces of rye and turn it into a full sized, more manageable sandwich, but I don't want to be that guy). I would, however, recommend ordering the soup extra hot because it usually comes out only lukewarm.

The last time I was at Canter's was just a few days ago, and I would say it was the worst experience of the 15-20. I had to wait forever to get my food, the matzoh ball was too dense (not boiled long enough) and heavy, the rye bread was slightly stale, and the pastrami was shaved too thin. But I will chalk this last experience up as an outlier of my generally excellent experiences.

In addition, if you need to run away from LV, go to Brent's Deli in Northridge (Valley area of LA). That's the best (non-homemade) matzoh ball soup in the country.

I almost scoffed at Uncle Cliffy when he said he was the "resident Las Vegas strip matzoh ball expert", but I agreed with pretty much everything he had to say. The true tragedy about losing the Stage Deli at the Forum Shops wasn't just their matzo ball soup, it was their mish mash soup. But I digress...Canter's on the strip is where you want to go for Matzo Ball soup now...and if you're off the strip, in Green Valley, you want to go to Weiss Deli on Green Valley Parkway and Sunset. Good stuff.

And we only have TV to blame for this lol terrible Golden Corral discussion. They play so many commercials for that obvious trash-hole and there isn't one close to here.

Ha! Don't judge my matzoh ball knowledge based on my post count. If this were a matzoh ball forum, I'd be a "poo-bah".

im planning on going to vegas by myself, staying for 3 days 2 nights so I can play and watch some of the ME. I'm not a heavy eater( do like to eat though) and i dont see myself eating anywhere fancy, how much should I bring to spend on food(rough estimate)?

^^^ $100-$120 should be fine. Good breakfast + dinner should be enough per day given the amount of calories per meal.

Vegas is not too much different than anwhere else. It also depends on where you're staying and how much effort you want to put into it. If you're staying at the Wynn and don't want to go elsewhere to eat, it's going to be $20-$30 a meal average. If you eat at a place with a food court or coffee shop it's going to be $10 to $20 a meal on average. I just came back from a 3 day 2 night trip and spent $50 or $60 total. If you play somewhere with comps, that makes it a little cheaper.

Never mentioned it before, but the tuna carpaccio appetizer at Grape Street Cafe is one of the best appetizers in the whole city imo. Not on the menu but frequently a special and they'll always make it even if it's not on special.

Any place with deep dish pizza in Vegas? I am trapped in no deep dish land and will be in Vegas, thought I would give it a shot.

Rosati's has a quite acceptable Chicago style deep dish.

Went to the Mountain Springs Saloon out past Blue Diamond on highway 160. Had a very very good brisket sandwich for $8 in a great atmosphere. Apparently it's a big biker hangout but tonight it was really slow. All sorts of great picnic style outdoor dining area, horseshoe pits. Really a fun place to grab a bite. It's a rarity for the Vegas area - a place that's actually a real bar.

Musashi: Ate there tonight after playing late in the Venetian, short taxi ride. I so wish there were more places like this in the world, the sashimi was fresh, the teriyaki crunchy and the service the best ive had in Vegas for a long time. Full value for money and can't wait to go back, highly recommended.
