Grando,

This prob deserves its own OOT thread, but Vietnamese places here (SF) generally have two things:

Imperial rolls aka cha gio aka fried spring rolls which are fried (I believe rice based wrapper) rolls with a bunch of chopped up stuff like pork, shrimp, veg in them. This usually comes with a sweet/tangy dipping sauce.

Spring rolls aka fresh spring rolls which are a translucent whitish wrapper (rice based I think) with some lettuce, vermicelli, maybe pork, and often whole shrimp. This usually comes with a peanut dipping sauce.

At Thai places, the fried spring rolls are often much smaller and more similar to Filipino lumpia. Also the coating/wrapper is different.

Sometimes Chinese egg rolls are like that, which is super lame. I assume we all know what legit American Chinese egg rolls are like.

A very popular item on low grade Chinese Carryout menu's back in the MD/DC area is Cheesesteak Eggrolls. It's exactly what it sounds like. Has anyone come across these in Vegas?

Foatie,

Lol wtf! That sounds like bastardized egg roll variations (southwest, etc) that you'll find at Cheesecake Factory, Applebee's, tgif, chilis type places, and I imagine at a ton of casino casual restaurants.

Huh, I know these as 'summer rolls', and cha gio as 'spring rolls'.

I actually first had cheesesteak egg rolls at the Continental in Atlantic city, run by Stephen Starr,a very good Philadelphia chef. They were incredibly tasty. Also the first time I had sriracha ketchup.

Bloo,

Yeah some places call them summer rolls too!

Basically, you never really know what you're gonna get with these rolls until they come out.

Philly Cheesesteak egg roll type things at Grand Lux Cafe. If you're not eating egg rolls/spring rolls with spicy hot Asian mustard, you're doing it wrong IMO

I always thought there were two types of rice paper for spring rolls, a thicker one for gooey stuff, and a thinner translucent one for drier ingredients. Maybe there are other types used for frying.

I like to converse with Vietnamese poker players about the nuances of rice paper. They all look at me like I'm crazy. They say there is only one kind -- the kind they sell at Van's. I'm pretty sure they're kidding me and I'm on to something, perhaps a secret society that exists to protect the ancient secrets of spring rolls.

Any place in Vegas have manjuu? I prefer habanero kimchi or pizza-flavor...

Anyone been to both the original and strip location of Anchor bar? The 3 times i've had wings in Buffalo they are colossal compared to anywhere else. Curious if it's similar.

Bonus points anyone been to Crown and Anchor? Thoughts? I've been to the cornish pasty spot next to lotus. Cornish is beyond good, it's better than the "real" thing so to speak. Curious if anchor is worth a visit next time. 24/7 is nice.

They have those @ Holstein's. Wasn't great & was like $14 iirc.

Anyone know a good takeout soup place? Preferably in the Rainbow/DI area. Don't feel too well today.

The best thing about Chinese Carryout Cheesesteak Eggrolls is that they're 2 for $3.50. This $14+ business, might as well go to Capriottis and get 18" of the real thing.

Capriotti's cheesesteak isn't even good. Pop's is better. Geri's Olde Philadelphia is great also, but they might be closed down, not sure.

Yeah, cheese isn't even melted at Capriotti's most of the time.

For chain places, I like Firehouse's steak & cheese better (without the mayo & mustard obviously...wtf).

Had Pop's once, was quite good. Never tried Geri's, but internet says closed permanently.

I agree Pops is the #1 seed for Cheesesteaks in Vegas, just way out of the way from any area I'm usually around. Capriottis is very inconsistent taste wise. I have found a few where the Cheesesteaks are made way better than others.

X2. Capastrami only at Capriottis. The cheesesteaks at Those Guys Pies look amazing, haven't had one yet.

Very plain Cheesesteaks here. The bread and the cheese have to be A+ to make a perfect cheesesteak. They fall short here. The Pizza Cheesesteaks there are pretty good though.

IMO The best cheesesteak in Vegas is definitely Pop's. The even use Amaroso's rolls from philly-plus they are open 24-7

That's a bummer that Geri's closed, it was really good and a real Mom and Pop place. But if it is closed then Pop's is the place to go for cheesesteaks for me, and the 24/7 aspect only enhances it.

I like Pop's but there seems to have been a decline there. I can't place exactly when it happened but it seems that it's not as good as it used to be.
