I haven't ever been to Vegas, no.
But I have traveled, and I have lived in both Thailand and the Philippines, both tropical climates.
I have a ton of experience with traveling to, and living in places I have no prior experience with.
When I was just 18 years old and fresh out of high school, I went half way around the world to China, a country and culture I knew little - nothing about.
I also didn't speak the language there, and, when I arrived, didn't know anyone there, yet I was able to get a job there that time, and on countless return trips.
I experienced similar situations in both the Philippines and Thailand.
Many times, when living in those countries, I also had little - no money, yet somehow found a way to survive.
If I could survive, with little money, and few contacts/people to help me out, in third world countries, where I didn't know the language, and knew very little of the culture, I feel pretty confident about my ability to hack it in a city in my own country, where I know the language and the culture, and when I have money.
Concerns for my welfare, kind as they may be, are not needed. I'll be fine, I'm tough, I'm ambitious, I'm a fighter and I don't quit, ever.
All, I was starting this thread to find out was, job availability, and how long I should expect to do a job hunt before I land one.
I wasn't asking for peoples personal opinions about weather or not I, personally, had the stuff needed to make it.
I know me, I know I do.

Re: Job Market in Vegas?
I don't mean to sound as if I fancy myself some sort of titan like figure that possess near god like abilities of endurance and strength.
But I do pride myself on my mental toughness, and my ability to just keep on keeping on, and not give up.
That being said, the most recent point made, about me sweating badly from the heat, and that ruining interviews is a very valid one.
However, taking a taxi would seem to be a pretty easy solution to that.
I'm all for, good solid advice, and definitely want as much information out of you guys as possible.
But, give up, don't even bother trying, just isn't good advice.
Ask anybody that's ever achieved anything in life, they will tell you that's the worst advice ever.
I could understand you telling me to give up, don't even try, if I was planning to become the next Lebron James or Tiger Woods, or what have you.
But getting a part time job to cover expenses while grinding 1/2nl, doesn't seem like an impossible goal to me.
I hardly see why I should just give up, and why I should just expect failure.

My advice- if you have to write a cover letter for a job, let someone proof it first.

Re: Job Market in Vegas?
Doing you a favor, OP, and correcting your post below. Seriously, your overuse of commas makes what you write very difficult to read.

Yeah, I know. Dry desert air isn't the same as tropical air. I understand that.
But plenty of other people flock there from all over the country for WSOP and touring each year during those months, that aren't used to it either, and somehow they survive.
I think I can too.
Anyway, as I've said, thanks for the concern, but this thread was supposed to be about viability of finding a job, not about if I can hack it in the Vegas weather or not.

See now, this is good advice.
I have, long been aware, that spelling and grammar are not where my greatest talents lie, so I would definitely be doing this

Re: Job Market in Vegas?
Stop, using, commas, between, words, in, your, sentences, it, makes, you, look, dumb.
There are jobs. Living in Vegas without a car is awful. People who come here for WSOP generally stay very close to the Rio and aren't making a commute using public transportation. I'm sure you can "handle it" but it's probably the worst option ever.
That's what people have been trying to tell you.

Quick question.
If you have never been to LV, how do you know you want to live there?
Should you like take a trip to try it out first? Yeah you want to move out of your town, but there are a thousand other places to move to?
Cheers,
S

Re: Job Market in Vegas?
So someone that has never been here to check it out, wants to move here with no car and no job? What could possibly go wrong?
OP, anyone that moves here without a car, and is not going to live right on the strip, is going to have a miserable existence here. Read the Las Vegas Sun and LVRJ about all of the pedestrian fatalities, not to mention the extreme summer heat, and lack of a useful public transportation system.
Imagine this, it is 105 degrees, desert sun beating down on you, as you sit outside and wait for a bus. You then get to transfer to go where you really want, waiting yet again in said 105 degree heat.

Like, if you want to play poker on the side while you work, LA is a much better place to go. Better place to live, and more jobs. Of course, I'm from SoCal, so I'm slightly biased.

Fairly awful suggestion from someone from Southern California.
Cost of living is 8x what it is in Vegas. He's looking for a menial hourly job, not a career.

Live poker. That's the reason I know I want to move there, even despite the dry heat.
I would probably prefer to live in LA, over Vegas, but I plan to start grinding $1/$2 and those games just look really bad in LA, because of the buy in rules, allowing people to buy in so short.
When I get to higher stakes ($2/$5 and definitely $5/$10,) I do look forward to playing in LA, especially at $5/$10.
After watching Liveatthebike episodes, it looks like there are some pretty juicy, action games at those stakes in LA.
For $1/$2 though, LA does not look like the place to be at all.

This continues to be a very good point, and I am glad you guys pointed it out to me, I wasn't thinking about it before.
Even if I chose to take a taxi to a job location for my initial interview, I wouldn't have the budget to take a taxi to work everyday. This means getting a day shift wouldn't be a very good idea, without a car.
That leaves me with 3 options:
1. Get a car
2. Get an overnight shift (of course I can't just GET one, at my own will, but I mean apply exclusively to such positions)
3. Wait to go to Vegas until I have enough money that I can give myself a reasonable shot at beating LLSNL without, having, to get a job. If I get an overnight job on top of that, it's just extra gravy, but not a needed thing.
I haven't even driven a car in 6 years, and when I did, my nick name from friends was crash, so option #1 might not be the best idea.
option #2 is a decent idea, but it cuts down on my job options by a lot, which in this economy, is probably a pretty bad idea.
That leaves option #3 as my best option.
So perhaps I would do better to wait to go to Vegas until I have enough money to set myself up for 5 or 6 months of expenses on top of a 25-30 BI roll, so that I don't have to worry too much about getting a part time job, and if I do it's gravy, but not an absolute needed thing.

This too.
I should probably be looking for residence on the strip. This most likely means a room in a hostel, or one of the cheaper by the week rooms.

That won't really help you, if you're staying in a cheap place like that on the strip you won't really be "on the strip." You'll be somewhere way north and still a bus ride or long walk away from everything. If you're not going to drive you're better off finding a place that's on a direct bus line to the strip (Trop, Flamingo, Spring Mountain/Sands).
But FFS take a few days and visit the place before you move there. You'll have a much better idea of the lay of the land.
