I'm strongly considering the move to Vegas I'm strongly considering the move to Vegas

I would be moving with about 40k. I plan on playing poker for a living. I've watched so many youtube videos over the last week. I'm trying to get a feel for the place. I was hoping i can post some questions and some of you can answer them for me. Some questions might be weird, but keep in mind i'm from Indianapolis and i've never been to Las Vegas. No particular order to these questions.

1) I've read about awards programs and comps and stuff. How do those work pertaining to poker? What are the best rooms to get the best comps? And most importantly, i just read something about free parking comps. Any details on this stuff would be great.

2) I'm looking for an apartment somewhat close to the strip. It does not have to be right near the strip, but i prefer something within 5 miles. I'm looking for something in the $700-$1000 range. Any info you might have about this would be great.

3) Are drinks/beers free when you play in the poker room? I've always wondered this.

4) Curiosity question here. What celebs live in Vegas?

5) Whats gas prices like?

6) What's the winter weather like? Is hoodies good enough or would i need a coat?

I'll have more questions, but if you guys can answer these when you get a chance, i would really appreciate it.

$1 to $2 an hour in comps for poker depending on where you play.

Don't live North, try SW or just West.

Yes, Free alcohol and most anything else when playing poker.

When its cold an windy you better have some layers on because it cuts right thru you walking down the strip.

When you move here, find the 2+2 map that shows which casinos are owned by which companies. Sign up for every rewards card in town. Even if they don't have a poker room or even if you think you'll never play there, get the card. You'll get mailers with coupons for food and free play. When you sit at the poker table, give the dealer your card. They'll swipe you in, and you start earning comps by the hour. The amount varies by room and by stakes. The usability also varies by property. Caesars, MGM, and Wynn all charge for parking. MGM will give you free parking if you hit a certain play level. Caesars is giving free parking to locals for at least the time being. Wynn is on record saying "Nobody likes being around poor people" so good luck getting anything comped there: https://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/07/stev...or-people.html

2) I'm looking for an apartment somewhat close to the strip. It does not have to be right near the strip, but i prefer something within 5 miles. I'm looking for something in the $700-$1000 range. Any info you might have about this would be great.

Are you bringing a car? Because apartments on the strip are super overpriced, loud, and annoying, and apartments in your range are ****ty and ghetto. Get a car, live away from the strip. I've been here 11 years and have lived in six different areas (seven if you include the place I'm moving to in the fall). There are really nice apartments in the southwest at Rainbow and Robindale or to the northwest in Centennial Hills.

3) Are drinks/beers free when you play in the poker room? I've always wondered this.

"Free", but tip the waitress a buck per drink.

4) Curiosity question here. What celebs live in Vegas?

Lots. Orel Herschiser and his wife play poker in a few different rooms around town.

5) Whats gas prices like?

I paid $2.54/gal for regular today.

6) What's the winter weather like? Is hoodies good enough or would i need a coat?

Layers. Hoodies are typically good enough especially if you're used to a real winter. You know how everyone says the summers aren't too bad because it's a dry heat? Well, it's also a dry cold in the winter. And those winds will bite right through you.

Don't you want to go take a vacation there for a week or two before you commit to moving?

1 is bad advice.
they aren't likely to give you anything in a mailer if you don't play. and some casinos randomly have promos for new customers giving 100-500 dollars in free slot play (usually loss rebates) that you can't get if you've already joined.

Seriously, you watched so many videos "over the last week" ? Which ones led you to this seemingly quick decision ?

Before committing you should be asking yourself the following questions:

1. What, specifically, in my experience to date leads me to think this is a +EV move career-wise ?

2. Did all my $40K derive from net winnings in live poker ? At what stakes ? If not should I plan to look for a j o b in Las Vegas, building on what I've done to date in earning my living, and playing full time on the side.

(This is a really important area for introspection. One well-known pro posted a similar "ask for help' request on 2+2 back in the day, but his focus was on "how can I improve my game", not "tell me about living in Las Vegas". How strong is your foundation for your plan ? Doesn't matter how large your bankroll may be, speaking generally. How strong are your skills in supporting you over time ?)

3. At my age (whatever that is) should I take 3 or 4 weeks and $5K/$10K or whatever and try the Las Vegas experience, instead of going by Youtube videos, before making a decision ? (This is a trial run re the questions of a. "wtf was I thinking" and b. "how long my bankroll is expected to last".)

4. What vices do I already have that might be amplified by living in Las Vegas, to the detriment of my earn from poker playing ?

5. What does bottle service cost in Indianapolis clubs ? Same question re eating at Steak n Shake ?

I think a couple of weeks playing here would be a good idea, either way it goes, provided you haven't burnt bridges to do it.

This has not been a quick decision. This is something i've thought about for 2 years now. I turn 35 in 3 months and would like to start over doing something else that i enjoy. A week vacation would be nice, but i'm terribly scared of flying or trains for that matter so I would be driving 30 hours from Indy to Vegas. It's kind of a deal where if i make the drive, I may take most my things ( not much ) and look to stay. Which is why i'm asking the questions. I appreciate the input.

I love long road trips to Vegas. Done it several times from Florida.

You could stop somewhere in Oklahoma for some poker and then Albuquerque, NM at Sandia and then Vegas.

Good Luck.

Good luck man. That's the dream, quit your day job, flout society's standards of what a proper job is and succeed at what you enjoy. Just don't end up like Trooper.

I havent had a job in 2 years. I've been sick. No real casinos in Indianapolis unless you want to drive to Shelbyville and play electronic poker with no chips. I've grinded some 1/2 cash games in a few areas around town for about 5k. I really want to be in Vegas. Take advantage of the lax pot laws. Play poker. Have more choices on games. Also be close to other cities i would love to travel to like Seattle, San Diego, Denver, Portland.

I think i'm pretty good at 1/2. But i fully expect the game to get harder in Las Vegas if i relocate there.

Few other silly questions.

1) Are their a lot of snakes in Las Vegas? I imagine so. Like real snakes. Not sleezeballs.

2) What are some cool spots in Vegas strip or downtown other than gambling or Top Golf or the outdoors type hikes and such. Like for instance, I saw on Neeme's vlog that he went to this bar that had this gaming area outside that was like giant games. Like chess pieces the size of people you had to move. I thought that was unique and cool. Also so a chicks vlog where she went to a nerd bar. Cant remember the name. What are some other spots like these that are different?

3) How much does a round of golf cost on a decent golf course?

4) What's the best sportsbook to be at?

Treasure Island will pay you $599 per week tax free if you grind 60 hours a week plus $2/hr comps. If you play well enough to break even, you can live on that. They also have free parking.

Making money playing poker is an iffy proposition. Very few people are able to manage that.
