Trooper, I just binge-watched all your videos. Well done bro!! I admire your resiliency and am definitely rooting for you. I know you've experienced some up and downs in Vegas with the low bankroll to start, but it seems like you're on the right track now. Good luck to you man!! Looking forward to more videos!!

love watching the progression of how vegas can beat a person down

New video up.

Stat Update (400 Hours)

Patriot, walk up to the Trooper and say that, and you will get to see a person get beat down, in Vegas. Troll much from your mom's basement? Only a miserable person would make a negative comment like you just did,

Your 157 mark on the graph is why so many people quit everything to chase the poker dream. They think that's the norm when in reality it's a delusion. They think they're awesome at poker because in 40 (short) sessions they've ran above expectation but expect that to be the norm. Sets lose, pocket kings lose, aces get cracked - that's the reality of grinding poker.

Keep up the good grind man. Be happy with $20 at $1/2 it's about as good as you can expect.

Some relevant gold from RobFarha's (another Vegas grinder) thread -

I've had this winrate conversation with probably 10 people since I moved to Vegas. For one, about 8 of them don't exist anymore. I had it briefly again with a guy the other night. No idea if he knows who I am or reads this, but if so, no hard feelings.

This guy seems to play pretty well but just based on a brief winrate conversation, probably lacks a strong understanding of how EV actually works. My favorite example to illustrate this, pot is 100$, you get it all in as a 70% favorite and win- you are running 30$ above EV. You deserved 70$ and won 100$, that's 30$ in your pocket that you don't deserve. The same is applicable to running bluffs, value bets getting called etc. When you win, you are above expectation. Much like when we lose that 100$ pot, we are 70$ below EV, not 100$.

So many kids I've met in Vegas and also a few back in my Foxwoods days have these inflated winrates over a few hundred hours and don't understand just meaningless that sample is. Of course if you're winning at a 90$ clip in a 2/5 game, you're almost certainly a top winner, but your actual winrate is not going to be 100$/hr. It's not possible.

For instance, I played 3 pots last year in the $4000 range at 2/5 last year, I lost all 3. This is a five figure swing that I can do absolutely nothing about. I will never play enough of these pots for variance to truly level out so I am just at the mercy.

So often we hear that story, but people don't realize how something as simple as drilling the right river card, or holding in big pots will have massive effects on your winrate. One thing I can 100% guarantee is that people with <500 hr sample sizes and massive winrates are always on the positive side of these situations. I can also guarantee that some kid with a 100$/hr winrate in a 5$ blind game could give two ****s about me and my math, so I have basically stopped trying to explain this situation in a logical manner. It always comes back to earth cause that's just how it goes.

So many times I've seen people come and go on 30k heaters then 30k downswings because the heater has them convinced that they are some sort of poker god immune to the boundaries of attainable winrates.

No one really want's to ever say they are winning do to running well or losing due to playing badly. It's skill when I win, variance when I lose. This is just simply not true.

Good update, Trooper. Thanks for keeping it real.

And the RobFarha excerpt is gold, worth taking very seriously.

Unrelated, but don't any of the fancier rooms (Aria/Bellagio/Wynn) have decent coffee as a Starbucks alternative? Only costs you a buck for a tip.
Just curious.

Nice update Trooper! Great stuff as usual. Sounds like you've got the mental state to do this, and that's 99% of the battle.

A few weeks into Vegas you had an update of yourself in the desert broke, discouraged, and down. Judging by the graph, your poker didn't really allow for this. Did you have unexpected expenses during the move that you didn't consider, or was it just for dramatic effect?

Thanks a lot! I just can't give up now, no matter how tough it gets. The toughest part is getting in enough hours, but I'm working on that!

I just played that one night. I won 136 at Bellagio and dropped 437 at Venetian. Just got late and I couldn't play any longer. My game was great too. Tournament donk wanted to give me money but it just didn't work out. No biggie!

rock solid brotha!!!

keep at 'em

Good vlog Trooper. I think you're ~$20/hr is fairly appropriate for 1/2/3 and that working towards the more desirable $23-$26/hr is right on.

I'm figuring in a couple months when the Series gets underway and there are tons o tournament donks (classic monkeys pushing buttons) you'll find plenty of lucrative 2/5 sports to attack to add to the roll.

Keep it up and good luck out there

It would be so nice if they had real coffee. Most people don't know this, or care really, but the coffee at almost every casino is a liquid concentrate. They don't actually brew coffee. That's fine, I just don't like it. And it's not every place, but all Caesar's joints and also Bellagio and Aria have the same crap. I hate it!

Pro coffee tip: At Bellagio, I get a comp for 3.99 and use it at snacks. It's fresh brewed coffee and you get free refills!

At other joints, I use comps too. At Starbucks at Caesar's properties you can just swipe and use reward credits.

The desert in the background was for dramatic effect, but I was feeling dramatic lolol. But I didn't start this tracking until Sept 20th, and that was like 3 1/2 months after I got here. I figured I'd start fresh without the pressure of being effectively broke in order to get a more real representation of how I'd do.

That said, I was down only about $300 when I was broke, and that was actually due to life expenses. Hotels, food, gas, etc. I knew it was a huge gamble and that I'd probably be broke and have to get a job, although the life expenses did take more than anticipated. And no gambling, hookers and obv no drugs lolol, except for coffee!

Thanks a lot! I know there's been much discussion across the globe about hourlies and if I was stuck making ~20 beans/hr it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm confident that I'll be above that, but only time will tell. Problem with finding out is, I may play more 2-5 before I get enough 1-2 hours to nail it down. Sick thing is, I really want to know what my hourly would be at 1-2 after 3000 hours almost bad enough to stay put at that level lolol. Almost as if, more than money, I wanna prove something. I guess I'm just super motivated, and the vlog is actually motivating me more!

For some reason, I do trust you on this. HOWEVER, I'm like a picky bitch about coffee lololol. I have a hard time believing there's someone actually pulling espresso shots. I could be VERY wrong because, well, I actually don't know everthing. Don't tell the others though...
