Going To Vegas For First Time
Going to Vegas for first time in mid/late Feb. I've been to AC a bunch of times and pretty much every time I go during the week I'm able to get a free room at Harrah's just by asking the guy at the poker room. I normally just pay the taxes and such, around $30 IIRC.
Is it safe to assume it would be about the same in Vegas? I'm looking to go during the week and stay like a Monday-Thurs night. I would like to be able to stay at a casino on or very near the strip. Don't know a whole lot about Vegas so, looking for any good input on the lodging situation and poker.
Looking to play 1/2 NLHE or some PLO if they have it.
Again, any helpful info would be great.

Re: Going To Vegas For First Time
If you go to AC a lot I imagine that you have a CET card. Call the number or check your account to see if you have any free offers. If not, you can probably still book a room at the Imperial Palace for very cheap. While I sometimes feel like I need a tetanus shot whenever I walk through there, it is centrally located and you could probably get a room as low as under $20/night.
And just about every room spreads $1-$2 and you can do a search to see various opinions on who has the best games. As far as PLO goes, your best bets are the Venetian and the Aria.

If you don't have funds for room, you can always pimp out your GF or put your poker BR on red at the roulette table...
On a serious note, go to www.allvegaspoker.com and look up the poker rooms on the strip (in the review section), it usually offers the poker rate on the page. If not call the poker room direct (number also listed on the page).

Re: Going To Vegas For First Time
check expedia for deals, i managed to scoop tropicana for $30 a night...which is newly renovated, and walking distance from mgm.
if your desperate for omaha hi, youll only find a regular game at venitian or aria, base your hotel choice around this, but no matter where you choose, as long as its on the strip, youll be within a walking distance of some 1/2 cash games somewhere. GL

This is true in the sense that given the current poker economy, there is less action at $1-$2 games then in years past. Keep in mind that in order to attract customers, $1-$2 rooms throw multiple promotions. This fact invites a lot of locals who like to play to accumulate comps, free roll hours, etc. Thus you don't get as many light calls and they're only going to stack off with the top part of their range. Also keep in mind that rooms that run $2-$5 games consistently do not take an extra drop and thus are generally free of this problem.

Awesome insight, much obliged. Which casinos would be the best for 1/2 and some possible 2/5?

For $1-$2 NL I think your best bet is probably the MGM as they have many games going daily and it is easy to practice good table selection. I think Bally's has been an old favorite for many and a lot of people have told me lately that the games at PH have been very good. The only thing that makes me hesitant regarding those rooms is the $5+$1 rake. For $2-$5 NL I think the Bellagio still has the best game. But if you wish to play a bit deeper than the Aria or the Wynn are probably your best bet. Some prefer the Venetian game, but I personally think that game is a bit nitty.

Re: Going To Vegas For First Time
I go for 2 weeks during WSOP each year, I wouldn't go as far to say I crush $1/$2 but I've always gotten a favourable profit from a 6-10 hours play per day, I tend to hop around the Harrah's properties and mix it up with a little o8 and/or low buy-in donkaments at the Orleans and maybe Red Rock.
I find that Flamingo and Bally's (sometimes IP also) are gold between 8pm-2/3am when people get drunk and just having a good time and don't really care so much for the quality of their game.
Have fun!

Re: Going To Vegas For First Time
Oh, in relation to the above.. O'Shea's is the softest but most laborious $1/$2 game on the strip. By laborious, I mean the crap you have to put up with going on around you, but the game is often good :-)

Re: Going To Vegas For First Time
I've learned a few tricks thru this forum and one is to book with your players card number that way you'll get promo offers for next time
Vegas is a bit different from AC first the women are much hotter and plentiful and they use poker rates or room discount for a certian amount of play in the poker room
