I've done all five of the above, so absolutely no judgement.

But ... someone walking across urban blight in the midday desert sun just to avoid paying a few bucks in fares or fees is LOL. If you're a salaried worker with limited vacation time, you're wasting it. If you're a poker pro, you're giving up play time. If you spend 30 minutes walking to save $10, think of it as paying yourself $20/hour.
It's not to save money. It's exercise and getting vitamin D. I'm fully aware that if I make $25/hr and I walk for 45 minutes instead of paying $5 for Uber, I'm losing EV. But there's other types of EV. Life EV for example.

I buy vitamin D pills. Just as good and no melanoma.

Walking to the Rio from the strip is -LifeEV. If you don't think so you've never walked it.

Maybe for your life.

I understand that walking a mile (in the heat) is not for everyone and some people even have physical limitations that prohibit them from doing it, but I don't get why some fail to understand that others just enjoy walking?

Countless tourists walk from MGM to Wynn (or even Stratosphere) to check out the Strip, that's twice the distance of Rio -> Bellagio.

I also feel like people think you are "cheap" if you walk somewhere. I've walked from MGM Signature to Whole Foods (~3 miles) a couple of times and took a taxi/Uber back each time. Taking the bus in both directions certainly would have been cheaper but that's nothing I enjoy doing.

Is that how the suggestion came about? The OP asked about exercise and vitamin D and someone suggested walking instead of cabbing?

There are plenty of ways to get exercise and vitamin D. Getting up early and doing laps in the pool before all the partiers arrive, for example (edit: to be clear, this was my favorite). Go volunteer to be your friend's caddy at a golf course. And if you're going to walk down a road, walking down the Strip where there's at least things to see is more interesting than getting the freeway overpass view that you get from Rio to Bellagio.

If you were truly concerned about Life EV, you'd make the best life decision. Not just pick the second worst one.

My last trip to Vegas I walked Aria to Mandaly and Aria to Wynn. It's a mix of wanting to get to those places but also enjoying the sights, sun and exercise.

I wouldn't walk from the strip to Rio though even though it's roughly the same distance. The walk just isn't through nice walking areas.

Also to be fair I was there in May. When I've been in Vegas in July I've been much less apt to walk at least during the afternoon.

the shuttle from Rio to Harrahs still runs. Took it a couple weeks ago.

You're so worked up about a random stranger enjoying a walk it's hilarious. I'm not even gonna continue arguing with you.

There isn't a way to track where the shuttle actually is though is there? I waited for it a few weeks ago, knowing that it only comes once every half hour when there's no traffic, and just gave up and walked to the B from Rio. Even worse is you can't really stand inside in the AC and be able to see out the door whether the bus is coming so you have to wait in the heat. Definitely annoying.

In years past when CET wasn't so cheap, they ran misters and fans at the bus stop. But they did at the WSOP too and those are gone.

I don't think you were ever arguing with me. You were just making up excuses for poor life choices.

I generally find the walk from the strip to Rio much more pleasant than walking the same distance from one strip hotel to another, especially the Aria. Not that the walk to Rio is particularly nice, but walking on the strip is pretty torturous, unless you're doing it early in the morning. I made the walk to Rio many times every WSOP, though I would try to avoid doing it in the middle of the day.

That's true. A couple times I grew tired of waiting and just took a cab. In theory it should be every 30...in practice? ehhhhhhh

O there would be 60 people waiting for a 40 person bus. Nothing like having to wait an hour outside for a shuttle, misters notwithstanding.

I don't get why some fail to understand that the chance of having your life ended by a drunk or inattentive driver on the walk to the Rio on Flamingo from/to the Strip is ridiculously high. It is ten lanes of traffic in spots and not a lot of sidewalk. It is not safe. If you disagree, you haven't walked it.

And queue the stories about pedestrians being mowed down on the strip. I don't care ... orders of magnitudes more people walk on the strip. Walking from Wynn to Mandalay is safe. Walking from Cesar's to Rio is not.

Sort of glad they are gone....

the ones at the wsop were pretty gnarly at times. i literally saw someone take off his shirt and start wetting his entire body with the misters, rubbing his hands all over... it was pretty sick. Almost looked like a prop bet gone bad, but looked a little too legit to be.

I think I threw up in my mouth just a little bit that day.

Could you please post some links to stories of people getting killed on that walk?

He is right. I am rarely scared of anything , but walking west on flamingos from las vegas Blvd is not fun. You have cars going 50mph within 5 feet of you walking , cars making fast rights onto 15 etc etc.

Not walking is for obese people. I'd rather be poor than 300 pounds.

This is just silly. I've literally made the walk from Caesars to Rio about a hundred times. I've never felt unsafe, and certainly not from being hit by a car. Yeah, it's ten lanes of traffic. But you're not walking in any of them....there is a sidewalk the whole way. And I've never heard of a car striking a pedestrian on the sidewalk in that area.

The only "Dangerous" part of that walk is when you're crossing over the bridge of the 15. There's a weird section of the on ramp Northbound that doesn't have a walk/don't walk light. People have been hit there, those people most likely being idiots from towns with 2 street lights that have never been taught "look both ways before you cross the street".

If you decide to take that uphill walk in the 116-118 weather we've had the past week you deserve every bit of torture you get from the sun on that walk. Not to mention smelling like a fresh opened pack of hot dogs for the rest of the day.

+1, never felt unsafe on that walk or had a car come close to me.

We did 800m repeats on the track with the heat index at 110 on Wednesday. The last three of those felt like torture. I doubt walking at 116 feels any worse than that.
