Casinos do believe they own anything that hits the floor, and there have been posts here from people who were grabbed by security and tossed for picking up items from the floor. I don't know what the Nevada statutes say, but the odds are good they are on the side of the casino. It kinda doesn't matter since the casino can trespass you for about any reason they please and it's unlikely they are calling the cops because you picked up $100.
They absolutely despise slot walkers and will trespass you for that. They do NOT want the street people prowling through the casino looking for unused machine credits or chips on the floor.
On the other hand, I once cashed out a small jackpot and as I was walking away a guy in a suit who had supervised the payout stopped me and pointed to a machine about 4 spots away. "There are some unused credits in that one--just hit cashout". "Cool. Thanks!" It was like $10, if I recall. Figure if the guy with a nametag wants me to take it so he doesn't have to do paperwork, I'll help him out.
I also once saw 50 cents on the poker room counter in front of a sign. It was hidden so the cashier couldn't see it. I pointed it out and got an exasperated *sigh* "JUST TAKE IT! We've had that sitting there for hours hoping someone will pick it up so we don't have to fill out the forms and so far nobody has grabbed it." ok... once again, if I'm asked to take it by an employee, I'm not gonna argue a lot.
I've found a few $5's. If it's beside a pit game, say, I'll give it to a dealer as a toke as I walk by. If it's in the middle of nowhere, I give it to someone in the poker room when I get there as a toke. Figure if they want to 86 me for that, I didn't want to give 'em my business, anyway.
This doesn't look very authoritative and contains no pointers to statutes. But it basically says the above:
